In my heads up display it says "check gages". shouldn't it be spelled "gauges"? I noticed this a while ago and it has bothered me ever since

Aren't a lot of the interior parts made in Canadia? Maybe those goofy Canucks use gage instead of gauge.

my guess is that it would have cost GM an extra $10 to put in the extra letter and we all know which one they would choose

Yeah, it has been discussed many times, either way of spelling works just the same :)

Canadia? :-#

No Gauge is spelled Gauge up here. At least it is on this side of the country.

I've always used gage to gage distance or measurement and gauge as one of them interesting things on the dash of the car or truck or on an air tank etc that gives you a measurement.

Interesting....... my spell checker says that gage is correct and gauge is wrong. :angry7:

They probably used that spelling to satisfy both countries. Better than spending a few thousand dollars to produce and develop two different HUD units.

If you want a linguistic adventure with spellings and translation. I work at a photolab and the machine labels are translated from Japanese to english. Makes some confusing labels.

  • Gage (gāj)
    n.

    1. Something deposited or given as security against an obligation; a pledge.
    2. Something, such as a glove, that is offered or thrown down as a pledge or challenge to fight.
    3. A challenge.

    tr.v. gaged, gag·ing, gag·es Archaic

    1. To pledge as security.
    2. To offer as a stake in a bet; wager.

[Middle English, from Old French, of Germanic origin.]

    tr.v. gauged also gaged, gaug·ing also gag·ing, gaug·es also gag·es

    1. To measure precisely.
    2. To determine the capacity, volume, or contents of.
    3. To evaluate or judge: gauge a person's ability.
    4. To adapt to a specified measurement.
    5. To mix (plaster) in specific proportions.
    6. To chip or rub (bricks or stones) to size.

[Middle English, from Old North French, gauging rod, of Germanic origin.]
So apparently gages isn't acceptable as being a gauge, but being a gauge and spelling it gage is alright =D> Bravo American English. :bluetwitch:

Also...not all GMs are the same. I distinctly remember my '90 Sunbird having a bright "CHECK GAUGES" light. It used to come on..A LOT...so I know this. (remember...it was white) And regardless of correct spelling, it looked downright silly...possible reasoning for them to change it to gages.

Well you know GM anything to save a few bucks. LOL. Someone probably had the bright idea to drop the "U" looked in websters and realized that it works so did it.

i think another justification (besides it probably being SLIGHTLY cheaper) is uniformity. "Gages" has 5 letters, like "check"
CHECK
GAGES
it kinda lines up, with gauges, it'd be a little bit offset and weird.

But on the HUD, it is CHECK GAGES, exactly as i have it written, next to each other, not above and below

But on some cars the there is a check gauges light and the words are on top of each other. Makes good sense. I honestly didn't think of that.
