I change mine about every 5k... but I run full synth. Usually my tell tail is I get sick of seeing the "change oil now" message on my trucks info center. It's set to go off every 3k or so.

for the most part I wait till my OLS (oil life system) lets me know, at the same time keeping an eye on it.
I get around 4 thousand miles and 5 months or so, when my oil life system goes off.

I run full synthetic, and go 6-7500 miles on a change.

Now that I use synthetic, I use the oil life monitor and change it when it gets around 20%. Previously, I used the 3 month/3k miles.

I've always changed my oil at 5000 KM (3000 miles). However, I think that figure is a left over from the days when gas had lead in it. The oil would scavenge a lot of lead and it would sludge up quickly.

I've recently started using higher end synthetic oil and changing half as often, but I do replace the filter at 5000 km just because it makes me feel better.

My suggestion is to go by the oil life indicator if you have it and get a used oil analysis done to verify it.

I change the oil in the Jetta every 5000mi and use high end synthetic. The VW ABA 2.0l is notoriously hard on oil.

On the 2k I go by the monitor, on the 89 usually 3 months because it doesn't see much use, the burb every 3k because it is driven a lot and already has over 200k on it.
