The torque converter let go along with clutches and a few other internals. It would appear the main failure was TC related.

Was this a stock trans? I don't see what could be so offensive about tranny failure.

Opinions vary about the greatness of the 4T65's predecessor the 4T60.
The trans was a pretty recent rebuild.

Also, in regards to the whole trans over heating, how expensive/worth it would it be to buy a trans cooler?

Worth every penny.
You can get a SSEI trans cooler from the junkyard . Or you can pick up a universal one from most auto parts stores.

Re: Headers Come Tommorrow!!!
It can normally reduce your Trani temp by 10 - 20 F
For every 10 F drop in temp, it will double the life of your trani.
Mine used to run about 20 F hotter than my coolant temp but now it's about the same.

Re: Headers Come Tommorrow!!!
Double the life of your tranny? Of the clutches maybe but i don't see 10* cooler operating temperature doubling the life of a trans.
I've never seen mine go over 190 and even with an under drive water pump pulley my coolant stays within -/+ 5 of 180.

Well the 10 F rule applies to the life of the fluid which can be directly related to the life of the trani.
My coolant runs at a constant 160 F and the trani never goes over 170 even on a hot day.
When I ran with the 180 stat, the trani temp would run about 10 F hotter and even saw 205 on a hot Oregon day.

You are trying to say that if a person lowers there trans temp by 40 degrees they with quadruple the life of the trans?2000Silverbullet wrote:For every 10 F drop in temp, it will double the life of your trani.![]()
Crunge, take a look at the wheel speed sensors and any wiring you may have gotten close to when working on the headers. Maybe something got bumped or pinched.

You are trying to say that if a person lowers there trans temp by 40 degrees they with quadruple the life of the trans? I'm kidding.
Ya, but but all kidding aside, if you follow that thinking if you lower the temp by about 80 degrees to room temperature it will blow out all the seals and won't last long at all.
As will all things, there is an optimum temperature above or below which will affect performance and life.
In my opinion that optimum temperature is 160 F
So the safe range would be 130 to 190 F but for every 10 F above or below 160 you will affect fluid life by the doubling or halving for every 10 F.
