Broken dreams and moonroof

Post by hammerheart »

So the recent whacky weather caused a massive ice storm to blow through and in the process dropped a tree on my dear Bonneville.

Thankfully the sunroof was the only damaged glass, but now I've got to figure out where the best place is to score a replacement. I was wondering if anyone here has much experience pulling and replacing these things.

Would a pick and pull be my best bet for getting a replacement? How much should I expect to pay and how much weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth should I expect in pulling/replacing?

It's my 1992 SSEi if that makes any difference.

Thanks and happy new year! :beerchug:

Can't help you on the how part of replacing the sunroof glass, but I'm sure you could find an assembly in a junkyard somewhere. Maybe someone can confirm if the sunroof assembly is the same between 92-95s and 96-99s? That should make your search considerably easier.

I'm also curious if the glass part can be separated from the whole mechanism. My car is 1300 miles away and I may be able to find the glass part locally and ship the part to myself if it doesn't include the track, motor, etc.

The last time I had a good look at it, it SEEMS that the glass can be separate from the whole assembly. Look for screws on the inside of the rim.

If that is true then it would be a huge help.

Does anyone have an idea how much I should expect to shell out for a replacement sun/moonroof?

I'm no expert but from what I've run across a good working complete sunroof would go for about $100. I've seen just the glass for $25-$50.

I think your only option would be a bone yard at this point. I'm sure GM doesn't have any more although, you could try GM parts websites.

That's a good idea if they can be competitive price wise. Right now my main concern is securing the opening with something more permanent than cardboard and plastic. I'm not too concerned about appearance.

Yes, junkyard or craigslist too. Never know who has spares.

Hadn't thought of that Matt, that would save you some labor pulling one if you could find something from a glass shop.

Here's one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1994-PONTIAC-BO ... 7e&vxp=mtr

Seems a bit steep though. But its free shipping and I'm sure the shipping isn't cheap.

Are the sunroof parts the same from 92-94?

I don't see why not. I can almost guarantee the glass is the same 1992-1999 but motor/wiring may be different.

They should be the exactly same between 92-95. After that, maybe minor differences because of the slight refresh.

IIRC the glass assembly is only held in by 4 philips head screws.

Can they be accessed without disassembling the whole unit and with the headliner still in?

I'm pretty sure. If you pull the sun shade back you should be able to see all 4.
