Additive to reduce E85 damage?

Talk about modifications, or anything else associated with performance enhancements. Have a new idea for performance/reliability? Post it here. No idea is stupid! (please use Detailing and Appearance for cosmetic ideas)

Additive to reduce E85 damage?

Post by ricosuave420 »

Hi all, I had a guy in a 76 or 78 cadillac devile or something and he kept his car like super duper clean, he was talking about some kind of additive that u put in the tank everytime you fill up, he said it was like a cap full per tank that stops the E85 from eating away at the fuel lines and fuel seals, basically it negates all damage done by E85 to older cars but for the life of me I can't remember what it was called, I went to a napa store and explained what I was looking for and he gave me seafoam which goes in the tank but it said you have to add the whole bottle per tank so I knew that wasn't what I was looking for, can anyone help?

Don't run E85 in vehicles not designed for it. They will run lean. Lean is bad.

First of all, it's not E85. The fuel you put in your tank is E10, 10% Ethanol, 90% Gasoline. E85 is a different blend of Ethanol, and you have to have a vehicle designed for it, or it will do even more damage than what you think E10 is doing...

I think this is what you're looking for: http://www.amazon.com/STA-BIL-22264-CS- ... roduct_top

Not sure how much it helps, there's only so much an additive can do. If you're that worried, the best thing to do is find a gas station that sells non-oxygenated gasoline (oxygenated = ethanol).

Well that certainly explains why I failed emissions and had to get someone to fudge the numbers so I would pass

It should say on the pump if there is ethanol in the fuel. Depending on where you live it may be hard to find non-ethanol fuel. Like in Illinois.

It's a federal mandate, all gasoline in all states, unless otherwise noted, is 10% Ethanol. There is a exemption for deoxygenated fuel for collector cars, snowmobiles, small engines, etc, but you pay for it..

Great, just fantastic, on a youtube video by motortrend the guys left a racing truck sit for 2 years with a carb with that ethonal gas and they came back and the carb was caked in this green crap and spent a whole day rebuilding it

Why would a 93 be going for emissions test anyway?

Your car is dealing with the E10 just fine. I wouldn't freak out about it.

That happens with gas with no alcohol as well. Even stabilized fuel would likely have problems after that much time.

On the inside that is. If it was on the outside it had other problems.

E85 is available out here in our area. We had a Taurus that ran on that stuff, a loss of 3-4 mpg. Not worth the lesser price, might be good in the winter to get the moisture out once in a while. Normal piston rings are not for E85 I've heard.

Our recent trip to upper Wisconsin showed us many of gas stations did not have ethanol in there mix, thus lower octane (91)

Seems like an infomercial. I'm in favor of the use of ethanol and live in a town with an ethanol plant but one vehicle is not statistically significant. Didn't read the text.
