Is this Rim Fixable ? Chrome-Aluminium Oxidation Bead Leak ?

Post by SPLLOUDER »

I Took a 2000 Swoopie Rim to the tire shop today to get it Dunk tested to see why this newer tire is still going flat .

it has a bad inner bead leak , so they took the tire off and this is what we seen ?

Is it fixable at all or it a goner ?

That looks like a chunk is missing from the bead? That is some horrible corrosion! If there is a chunk missing it will require welding to fill it back in from a wheel repair shop. It is definitely repairable, just depends on if it is cheaper to repair or get a other wheel. I would bet though it is cheaper to get another wheel.

Yeah, it can probably be fixed, but it's probably cheaper to buy a different rim...

Yes it's repairable. I ordered some GP wheels that had that oxidized crud on it, been sandblasting them and they are turning out to look ok.

I had some with similar oxidation and mine were cleaned up with new tires installed. Been 20k miles and no leaks to this point.

Drill with a wire cup works great.

Wire wheel it and then make sure the shop that mounts it uses a good amount of bead sealer.

I had a rim that looked similar. Had the inside of it refinished and painted with a flat paint after it was cleaned up and I have not had any issues. It was sandblasted and painted.

When I worked at a tire shop, we had a grinder with a wire wheel mounted right to the tire machine, and you spun the rim as you cleaned up the bead with the wire wheel. Cleaned wheels up perfectly.
