Decision time... sell my SSEi or Camry?

Decision time... sell my SSEi or Camry?

Post by 97seagain »

So I FINALLY got my 2000 SSEi a bit cleaned up and on the road (http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... =9&t=24529), and she sure drives nice! I have a couple of minor issues to work out (intermediate shaft, axle, windshield, A/C needs charged, possibly tires). I'm in the process of detailing it, but the hood is beyond polishing, and the fuel door area needs some work... so that will be at least a few hundred more if I choose to have it done.

In the time that the SSEi sat without a motor, I found a 2004 Camry in Naples, Florida while on vacation, and got it for a great price ($6900). It only had 40,000 miles, full service records, owned by an old couple from Canada who used it when they visited their condo. Given its history in Florida, it is spotless underneath, drives great, and gets 30 mpg consistently. But its boring... plus it doesn't have anti-locks, which are somewhat nice given our Ohio winters.

The SSEi has 140,000 on the body, but only 9,000 on the transmission, I just got done rebuilding the motor and installed all new brakes. Everything on the car works. There is a little bit of rust underneath... although the brake lines are a bit rustier and may need replacement in the next year.

I figure I could sell the Camry for around $9000... and the SSEi for about $3500 or so as it currently sits. Profit on either would be about equal at these sale prices.

I also considered putting them both for sale, for $9000 and $4000, and see which one sells first.

Solid and boring, or a bit rusty and fun???

Personally, they both oughta last a long time, but I'd totally sell the Camry and keep the Bonneville. There's something about a Bonneville. ;)

Me, I'd keep the Bonneville and get rid of the Camray. I love the way your Bonneville looks. The Camray is just another Janpanesse car. - BC

While the SSEi needs some more work to get it solid, it'll be worth it in the end. Just think of how much better it'll be to get into the SSEi in the morning vs the Camry.

First off, you gotta remember who you're asking, LOL.

Gotta figure out what's best for you. I can't stand the Camry, but if it's better for you, then sell the Ei, or vice-versa. I like your idea of listing them both, but I have a strong feeling the Camry will sell first, given the low miles and no rust.
Bye Bye:

LOL... I was considering posting this same question to toyotanation.com or camryforum.com... but honestly, I hate both of those sites! And I know what their answer would be.
Speaking of sites, this one has been instrumental in getting me into this project, and I appreciate all of the help I have got over this past year. :beerchug:

I never expected to come home from Florida with a Camry, I was actually trying to find a clean Bonne... but the only interesting one I found had spent most of its life in Ohio... :dontknow:

My ultimate goal is to find a very clean SSEi and replace both the Camry and current SSEi with it. We shall see.

How the heck did you get an 04 Camry with out ANTILOCK brakes??? Pretty sure even Hyundai Accents and Toyota Yaris in 2004 had that standard no?

Keep the Bonneville!! I would much rather drive that to work than the Camry. Especially with a new transmission and the work you have done...it will serve you well for many years!

I agree with Ed. Even if you did post this on a Camry forum, they would say keep the Camry. We all have a little bit of bias on certain subjects. When it comes down to it, you need to do what's best for you. My opinion stands at what I posted earlier though. ;)

I can give better responses since I neither own a Bonneville or a Camry.

Keep the Camry. Invest in better wheels (NOT 16s) and it should be a good ride.

The rust on the SSEi might be the deal breaker for me... where underneath is it specifically? I would almost be tempted to sell both and put it towards a newer, low miles SSEi.

I used to be a regular on ToyotaNation. Good community, but I don't feel they're as technically savvy as the group we have here.

better responses? LOL A Camry is no where near the ride and comfort the Bonneville is by far although it could last longer. I was so disapointed in a well equipped Nissan Altima with the 3.5 V6. It was uncomfortable, felt like you were sitting on childrens carseats, was noisy inside due to road noise, CVT was annoying. All in all it turned me off for Japaneese cars. My Bonneville is quiet on the road, not much road noise, feels like a heavy car, not a tin box, great cars. Do whats best for you though, the rust problems are a troublesome area for any car that has it. There are clean Bonnies in the south :)
