I keep seeing the "High Mileage" oil in auto parts stores, but "high mileage" these days means >75K.....

so i'm like

So, my question is, what kind of oil do you guys use for your 200k+ cars?

Almost 230,000 on my '03 and been doing 10,000 mile oil changes on Mobil 1 full synthetic since I bought it with 125,000 on it.

I have run 7500-10k in my car on the Pennzoil as well.

You can get Pennzoil platinum for $25 for 5 quarts and a filter at various auto-parts stores at various times of the year. Consider 5 quarts and a decent filter normally are around $15, even with 5k mile oil changes for the conventional, you're still ahead a few bucks, plus your engine is better protected.

I know Ryan will argue with me, but Mobil has cheapened up their formula for the standard Mobil 1 "Full Synthetic", without reducing the price. At $7/quart, there are much better oils for the price.

I run M1 HM in my car and change it every 6-7k miles since I got it at 130k. Still runs great with no problems.

those all sound like great options. I just got my oil changed, but next time i do i'll check around for prices.

Ed, what would you consider a "decent filter"? Are there certain brands that are better? Or certain sizes? Does any other size filter even fit my car, like, a bigger one maybe?

M1, Napa Gold, Wix are good choices.

Your best bang for the filter is Purolator Pureone Filters. They're $7 each and typically on Advance Auto Parts website they can spring up as 2 for $10. You can't do better for the price a la carte.

Well, I've got 293k on my '97.

For the last 20k miles since I've had it, its probably had the oil changed 14 times (dont ask lol)


But I always run farm and fleet oil. You can't beat $1.69 a quart and then do normal 3k miles change intervals.


I have had to drain the oil so many times, I'm almost afraid to use the expensive stuff lol

Conventional cheapo stuff has always been good to us. As long as you stick to the 3k service interval.

Parker,

Mobil 1, K&N, Wix/NAPA Gold/Carquest (same filter, different sticker), AC Delco, Purolator PureOne and Amsoil EaO are all good oil filters. FRAM is not.

The filter from a 00 S10 4x4 4.3L will fit, but I don't know about clearance on your car with the ground and other objects. I'll let someone else chime in on that.

When I have run out of Bonneville filters I have used some from our '99 Suburban.

EXACT same filter but is just a little longer, so thus more area to clean the oil. It worked fine on my car.

I really have no argument against your comment Ed, other then ot can't be top bad or I would have issues by now. I have considered switching, I am not die hard Mobil 1, it's just what I buy.

Really I don't do the 10,000 mile oil changed for any other reason but to not do them so often :lol: even if it was a little more expensive it would still be worth it to me.

I've been using Wix '99 Blazer filters whenever I remember. and I'll watch for prices on some of those brands of oil in about 3k miles. thanks guys!

Like I said, it's not an engine killer, but it's not what it used to be, and it's not the best oil for the price you pay. It's still marginally better than conventional oils. I'd like to see a used oil analysis of your M1 after 10k, to see if it has broken down to the point where it's no good.

The owners manual on my '92 sez you can go 7500 mile between oil changes and a filter every other change using conventional motor oil. All that is under ideal driving conditions. We bought our car new November '91. It has 284K miles on it now. I used conventional oil the first 50K miles or so and changed the filter every oil change. Ever since about 50K miles I have used synthetic oil and changed it and the filter about every 5K miles. I had an oil analysis done the last time I changed the oil and the oil was in great shape. My Cruze will be "high mileage" in 2.5 years if it keeps at the current rate. I'll use the recommended oil, not this HM oil. HM stuff can be good for oil burners or leakers.

AC PF52. That's what I use. About a pint more capacity, so you can just drain the oil, swap the filter, and pour a whole 5 quart jug in there.

I have 217k on my work rig, a '94 Ford Ranger 4x2, 3.0 V-6. I bought it with 95k on it 12 yrs ago...

I've always run Castrol 10w-40 'High Mileage', and ahem, a Fram 'Tough Guard'. :dontknow: (Before I read that Frams are shyt, and that their TG filter is the only barely acceptable one they make...) I just replaced oil and filter recently, and am trying the new NAPA Platinum, which is supposed to be a re-branded Wix 'Synthetic' filter.

I just changed oil/filter in my wife's recently acquired '95 SE. Again, Castrol 'High Mileage' 10w-30, and NAPA Platinum.

IIRC The NAPA "Platinum" is designed for long intervals and synthetic fluid. A bit overkill if you only run conventional oil. Much better than that Fram you had before, though. :wink:
