weird feeling in steering wheel

Post by douellette88 »

most of the time when driving my 97 ssei it feels like the steering wheel kind of like shakes back and forth (side to side) a little bit. to me it kind of feels like a cv shaft....does that sound right?
Hoping to return to an H-Body soon!

It could be. The first thing I would do though is rotate the tires and see if the issue moves.

:withstupid:

Try to pin point the wheel that is vibrating, then rotate the tires and see if the moves with the tires.

If it stays at the same wheel, it is most likely a CV shaft

If it moves, it's the tire itself.

If it gets worse when you apply the brakes, It is a warped brake disc.

Not always, there are a lot of things to cause a vibration. Tie rod ends, ball joints, rack and pinions bad or loose from subframe.

If it is still there after rotating the tires, put it on jack stands and crawl under it and see if there are any loose suspension or steering components. Inspect the CV boots while there also.

Right, I shouldn't have said "Most likely", possibly would be a better word.

If it says, it is an item to add to the inspection list.

Does this happen at certain speeds? Low speed 35 and below? 55-65? 70 and up?

If it's noticeable below 40 on smooth roads, I'd go after the tires. Bad belts, dry rot? Wear?
