project: 2001 SSEi (green)

Post by harofreak00 »

Saw this on craigslist this morning. 2001 SSEi, green/tan, 184k. It was listed on a dealers lot for $1695, with the tranny having hard shifts. I wasn't the first caller, but I was the first to say that I would be there with cash, he agreed to hold it for me. Drove 2.5 hours to pick it up.

I was pretty impressed when I first saw it, it looks pretty straight. It took me a while to notice the damaged front and rear bumper covers. When I took it for a test drive, the tranny wasn't shifting hard at all, and there were no tranny codes (I was expecting a P1811). It did have these though:

P0404 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Range/Performance
P1404 IAT - B Circuit Malfunction/ Exhaust Gas Recirculation Closed Position Performance
C1214 & C1248 Some sort of EBCM problem

It does have brand new BFGoodrich Traction T/A (just like my car). Interior is pretty clean, but the carpet could stand to be cleaner.

I paid $1700 out the door with tax and license and expedited title transfer. I'm not exactly sure how I'm going to proceed on this one. If I have to put new bumper covers on, and have them painted, I'm looking at about $800. If the tranny needs the PCS replaced, I'm looking at another $400. That brings the budget up to $2900 pretty quick, doesn't really leave much room for profit. I think my best bet would be to resell it without doing much do it. This means leaving the bumper covers and tranny alone. I'm guessing that I could sell it for $2700 as it sits, without even doing anything. I could maybe get $3000 if I replace a few small things (sunshade, visors, radio buttons, etc)

Not bad. Could you get $4k if you painted the bumpers and made sure the trans didn't need work?

Probably not, based off the prices of the last 2 higher mileage ones I sold.

Silver 01 with 202k sold for $3250
Black 00 with 195k sold for $3500

I'd think about parting it out if I didn't have so many others getting parted also.

Another good deal you snapped up there. Like you say, probably not as much profit margin on this one though. A good detail and buffing, replacement of the couple interior parts it needs from existing inventory, and making sure the tranny is solid (without replacement) would net you probably the highest profit. But, it would be nice to see it fully fixed up, but maybe I'm just partial to the uniqueness of seeing a dark green one all shined up :)

On another note, I see your truck is the first one in the line of cars parked on the street, lol ;)

I would say drive it for a while, and if the tranny issue surfaces, take care of it. If not, dump it.

When my car was acting up with the PCS (P1811) code, it was only when the trans was completely warmed up. Even when the trans was warm, it wasn't consistent...it seemed like hard city driving was the only time I could get it to act up. But once it acted up, it sure does produce a hard shift....which was shown by a trans shift time of like 50 ms...

I've put about 40 miles on this car, with the tranny at operating temp. I haven't noticed any harsh shifting at all.

To those of you with the P1811 PCS code, how often would you experience the harsh shifting? and during what conditions?

Usually after a long drive and then I would get in stop and start traffic. That's when I waould start seeing the hard shifts. I would take the wife to work and it would start on the return trip in traffic, 20 miles one way.

Same scenarios for me...I would drive the car back and fourth from home to school, and if it was going to act up on me it would always be when I was nearing my destinations which was a 45 mile (1 hour) ride...in which both destinations consisted of about 3-4 miles of city driving.I really only noticed it during warmer days when the trans would warm up to operating temps after about 10-15 miles of driving. With my car, if I were to drive it back and four from home to school 10 times, I would say it would maybe act up twice..under exact driving conditions, so it was very hit or miss (well mostly miss! haha)...
