Spark Plugs.

Post by Blown93SSEi »

Due for spark plugs now. Usually I normally get the Autolite Copper plugs, But I'm looking for ideas on what other brand and metal would be acceptable or more preferred over the Autolites.

If this is for your 97 SSEi, Try a set of NGK TR55's... Or if you want Autolite, try the 605's these should be one range colder than stock..

I guess it depends on what you are looking for... Are you looking for more performance, or just a good stock replacement plug?

I second the NGK TR55 call. It's the only plug I've run on all 3 cars since they hit my driveway with the exception of one set of autolites.

ok i was searching and came upon this thread about spark plug recommendations. i just seafoamed my intake (loved the smokeshow) and wanted to change out the plugs and was going to put in some ngk tr55's but i did a search on advance auto parts and seen there were 3 kinds. there were nickel, platinum, and iridium metals. which one do i get?

Copper. TR55 is the full number for them, any letters after will be for platinum or iridium. These: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp ... Assigned=1

Also, this is an OLD thread. You would've been best off making a new thread and linking this one.

As an aside, use the iridium OR coppers DO NOT use the platinums as they WILL destroy the motor.

Platinums won't destroy the motor. They will destroy themselves in short order in a supercharged or turbo engine.

Never use Bosch Platinums in any GM 3800 engine. They are known to be a problem in waste-spark ignition systems like ours.

Now I know most of us change our plugs often enough not to really worry about the designed limited lifespan of a copper plug...usually considering how low cost they are...however is there any benefit whatsoever to running iridium plugs over a copper for the short period of time that a lot of us do?

No. Iridium is a "set and forget" type of plug. I do lots of travel with little time for car work, so I got iridium plugs on the last tune-up. They won't be looked at until 30k miles have gone by. Then, they'll likely get re-installed for another 30k miles.

Iridiums specifically say on the box now to not gap them too. I broke the tip of one off while attempting to gap it way back when, and I guess a lot of other people have too.
