65E Transmission problems.

Post by Custom88 »

Hey guys, been a while since I've logged on, just been crazy busy with things which in a way brings me back here. I purchased a 2002 Aurora 3.5 V6 with the same 65E transmission the Bonneville uses in May 2008. A few months later, the transmission started to have a very lazy shift when cold. Just prior to the transmission shifting, you could feel the engine lose a lot of power, and the shifts would be very slow/mushy. After driving around 2 miles, the transmission would shift quickly/firmly like normal. Now, the problem has intensified and has more symptoms. NOW when cold, if you push the gas down quickly the car will accelerate like it is bogging down horribly, then there will be a very harsh SLAM sensation and the car will accelerate normally, but still with the soft shifts. It does NOT feel like a transmission "slip." I have had it to a Buick dealer and they did a transmisison flush/filter change, and the problem remained. I had around $400 in labor in "diagnosing" a problem but they could find nothing wrong. I can't afford the time, or money to leave it at the dealership any longer. Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be? I'm stumped and admittedly don't know too much about transmission problems.

The best way I can describe when the transmission slams is like doing a neutral drop. The car will barely move then all the sudden the power kicks in, sometimes making the tires even squeal. I have a video of when the transmission shifts softly. The RPM's drop fast, then bounce back up oddly. Also, look at the beginning. You can see the RPM's jump when I hit the gas, but the car doesn't start moving for a second or two. The transmission fluid is bright red, and is not burned. one final thought as well, when fully warmed up you can drive the car normally and everything is A-ok. you can do a full throttle first-gear downshift, and it will accelerate like a brand new car. If you were to do a full throttle downshift into first gear when the transmission is cold, the car would drop out of gear and redline. This is really a problem because I drive the highway every morning and it is VERY difficult to merge on when the transmission just won't GO. Thanks for any help guys! (this car is making me go broke!!)

Welcome Back! Didn't you have an 05 CTS before, or am I thinking of someone else?

As far as your tranny issue, I'm not sure. Sounds like it could be a solenoid issue, but it's hard to tell. You could try a can of Seafoam TransTune in your transmission, and see if it helps.

Yup, sold the CTS and am kicking myself for it now.. It had 87K and only got 13K for it! Still owe $5,999 on the Aurora and it needs a LOT of work. (3 bad wheel bearings, bad ISS, transmission problem, etc.) I have put in Lucas Transmission fix but it had no effect. I forgot to mention that!

Try the $5 shift kit and Dexron-VI. That helped the lazy shifting, and it doesn't do the shudder thing in first anymore. It's about $65 for the kit assembled at Lowe's and 14 quarts of Dexron-VI from Wal-Mart.

Welp. We're both in the same boat with identical transmission problems....I'm going to attack it with several cans of trans tune and a new filter and see if I can get some crap broken down out of the valve body....and possibly...sort of renew most the solenoids. At the very least..it'll be cleaned up for when the PCS is eventually replaced. Shall see.

If you have a bad PCS, that can cause all of the problems your having.

I went online to google and found a transmission shop literally two miles down the road from me downtown. lol. Didn't know they were there. I shot them an email about the symptoms and asked if they are familiar with the 65E. Hopefully They get back to me today!

What sucks is their response will most likely be "Feel free to bring it in and we will check it out". Sadly no gives out free help anymore...

I hope this gets resolved...I'd be pissed to buy that car only to find out it has a bad transmission, but with the known PCS problems, it just may be that.

Do you mean downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota? I'm just 45 minutes north of downtown, I can replace your PCS for about $375 parts and labor.
