Window regulator?

Post by bonnevillain »

My drivers side rear window stopped working.. it was intermittent for a while, and now it's stopped completely. I don't hear anything happening when i try to move it, would that still be the regulator? or should I take a look at the switch/wiring/door module.

have you pulled the door panel off yet? I can't hear anything from my regulator with the panel on.

If you're still not hearing anything with the door panel off I'd stick a multimeter on the connection to make sure power is getting to it. I'm sure someone can provide a pin-out and expected values.

If you can't hear anything, its probably not the regulator. Is the window still up? The window should fall down if the regulator is bad.

Not to hijack this thread but my passenger side rear window regulator I believe went but just want to be positive. I was able to lower my window the other day but when I went to put it up it won't move. I am able to pull the window up a certain height then when it gets about 3" from the stop there's pressure that doesn't let me pull it up anymore. When I hit the button I do hear a noise.

Sorry didn't want to hijack but figured were having almost same problem so why start another thread.

I just had a similar problem on my 01 Silverado and I don't know for certain that GM uses the same system on their cars that they do on the trucks but I have reason to believe they would. Yes it would then be a regulator problem. However I didn't buy a new regulator. I just replaced a frayed cable and the housing that it ran in. You have to use some ingenuity to fasten the cable in the drive pulley but it cost me $5.50 as opposed to $100.00 plus for the regulator from a jobber(GM is more). GM doesn't sell these cables, (either the brake cable or the shifter cable works), but your nearest bicycle shop does and that is all they are using. If you take this route just make sure you get the cable exactly the same length as the original once it is installed. The cable is galvanized so it doesn't work to solder it. Best of luck! zamjohn

The cable isn't what fails in the Bonneville regulators. The plastic piece that holds the 2 cable ends together gives out.

With my problem do you think I could just do the mod of fixing of the regulator that was writing up in the techinfo area or am I looking at buying all new?

Do you have the write up on how to get the motor and regulator out of the door? For temporary I was able to pull up on the window while pushing the button up for it to be able to get closed and I then put things inside the door to keep the window up.

its pretty simple. 2 bolts hold the window to the regulator, and 3 bolts hold the regulator to the door.

Ok I'll tackle that tomarrow after class. I guess use fishing line to get glue off the window from holding it on the regualtor?

Found this site that has new regulators with motors for the cheapest I seen:

If you are going to replace the whole mechanism it is a fairly easy repair. There is enough room to get everything in and out and the door panel comes of easily. You'll just need enough time to completely do it. Took about an hour and a half last time I messed with my 88SSE and it was a little tougher repair.
