My projector retrofit w/ how to

Post by Looong4 »

Well I've been wanted to do this for a while; I scored a set of OEM headlights at a swap meet and finally dug into them.

The projectors are off a 05 Cadillac sts like so..
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2005-OEM ... ccessories

I got 2 housings with one ballast and HID bulb (one was missing  ) for $80 after shipping.
each housing had two projectors, one that was HID and one that is halogen but I couldn't tell the difference between the two. There is ALOT of cutting required. The projector shrouds in the sts were connected in a metal bracket so if you wanted to aim one you could aim both. So each housing had to be cut to make it look presentable and then I painted them after.

I do have two ballast and HID bulbs but one is whatever came with the housings (5k?) and one is from the set I bought a few years back (6k) so I will wait till I have a matching set, for now I just have 9005 halogens in.

Overall it was somewhat easy aiming them and such but the only thing that sucked was cutting the sts housing apart.
But worth it I love the look.

I will leave the taking them apart and how to put them together out because there are some other threads that have that.

Started with this

Inside you will find this

Most projectors come separately but if you choose to use these projectors, (I did because of cost), you will obviously need to cut the two housings apart, giving you this

At one point thought I lost my lenses...but...I found my fiancé and our friend playing with them...

I noticed that the HID lenses (low beam) are perfectly clear and the halogen (high beam) are slightly blurry. Hard to notice in pics.
Did some research and apparently the clearer the lens the sharper the cutoff.

The stock reflector just pops out with a little force and I mounted the projector directly to the back of housing

Here are both in, keep in mind all the space around the projector it hidden by the stock housing lens and black shroud inside it.

Painted part of turn signal reflector to match wheels and make it not so shiny.

My circuit, the Caddy lights came with HID bulb and Phillips HID ballast for lows and H11 halogen high beam bulb.

Go away dude, your car is hot.

Interesting choice on the projectors. I'm using FX biXenons in my retro, but I also have a pair of E55s I might use in my bike.

Looks great!

Ya I didn't want to sink alot of $ into it and I wanted to do Highs & lows. $80 for all 4 was something I could do...

That's cool. I got a really good deal on my projectors, so I can't say I don't understand. Sometimes the HID stuff gets pricey.

Are you leaving the highs halogen?

It seems like you finally perfected the idea. I know several members have wanted or tried to do this but I think yours probably looks the best so far. Good job! Loving the car, looks bada$$

Haha, You know I was going to but I didn't think anyone would buy the projectors I bought anyways because of how much cutting is required. Plus if anyone has any questions they are more than welcome to ask, but I thought Pat did a good job writeing it up, except I just didn't do it on the reflector because I wanted my housings to look darker.

bonnevillain wrote:so how much of a difference did you notice?
Yes big difference even with the halogen lights. Its amazing how the light it exactly where it needs to be. I guess this is why they are on pretty much all new cars.
My other HID bulb is in the mail so I will post pics of the cutoffs and such after the HIDs are in.

Best way to do this is to get shrouds with the angel eyes built in

Those lights look awesome. Looks stock.

I hate those wheels though, they looked sweet on her car??? Wonder why they look so much different, is it the bigger car?

I'll have to see them in person when I come up in May. They certainly don't look like 18's,

I miss your 20's. :sad5:

Edit: I took another long look at them, it's because the tires need some shine! Get some gloss on the tires you slacker! :bhuh:
