I purchased a 1996 Pontiac Bonneville last July with 140k on it. I now have 163K on it. I have done oil changes every 3K, put in a new tensioner assembly and pully, brake pads, spark plugs and wires. I noticed when i did the wires they were very old, that has me wondering if the car has any other problems, like timing belt and such. Some of the coil packs were rusty, i cleaned them up with sand paper. The UIM has may 1996 stamped in it, so that hasnt been replaced, but no problems yet. the AC clutch grinds, but still works. there is a weird tick on the passengers side of the engine when i shut the car off, sort of like something isnt cliking into gear???? Also, when i accelerate from a stop. the car sounds like it may be backfiring, but im not sure, if anybody has been in the pits when a super modified comes in and they clear there engine, it kinda sounds like that, but not as loud. the tranny fluid is brown and burnt, so time for a flush. I want to try and make this car last to 225K, so if there are any suggestions or comments on my car please let me know or ask if i have had other problems that i overlooked that may lead to something major
Thanks
Ok, heres the Rundown

Re: Ok, heres the Rundown
Sounds a little ill maintained.
Edited for updated maintenance list:
Coilpacks were rusty? What part(s)? The posts? Make sure to apply Silicone Dielectric grease to the insides of all the spark wire boots if you haven't already. Did you clean the ICM mounting plate as well?
Your A/C compressor might be dry. Have you checked it recently? Thats REALLY not good for it.
You'll have to better describe the clicking noise at shut down. Video might help?
Also, these engines don't have timing belts. They're overhead valve, cam in block engines.
Edited for updated maintenance list:
- Clean TB http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... =48&t=1661
Run seafoam through gasoline and intake.
Then check to make sure your maintenance is up to date.
Grease: Ball Joints, Tie Rods Every 8-10k (Synthetic grease if you've got it)
Air Filter Every 15k (Amsoil Ea, Purolator PureONE)
PCV Valve Every 15k
MAF Sensor Element Cleaning Every 15k http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... =48&t=1661
Fuel Filter Every 12-15k (Purolator, AC Delco, WIX)
Spark Plugs Every 30k (NGK TR55 or Autolite) (Never Bosch)
Ignition Wires Every 30k (Napa Belden, AC Delco, Autolite, NGK) (Never Bosch)
Oil & Filter Every 5-6k (Mobil1 and Purolator PureONE) (Never Fram) http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... f=45&t=214
*Conventional Oil Every 3k(Pennzoil with a WIX (Napa), Delco or Purolator filter)
Transmission Flush Every 15-20k (Always make sure filter is changed when flushed)
Cooling System Flush Every 25k (Peak or Prestone Green Coolant Only) (Never Dexcool)
Oxygen Sensor Every 80-100k (30k for non-heated) (AC Delco or Denso) (Absolutely never Bosch)
*Special Considerations*
All 3800s, LG3, LN3, L27, L36, L26, L67 & L32, especially important on vehicles factory installed with orange Havoline Dexcool Antifreeze/Coolant:
Lower Intake Manifold Gasket Replacement, every 80-100k (ignorance of this can allow coolant to enter your engine oil, this happening can cause irreversible lower engine damage, requiring replacement of subject engine)
Series II, Naturally Aspirated, RPO:L36:
Upper Intake Manifold Plenum Replacement, every 80-100k (ignorance of this can allow coolant to enter your intake manifold, possible damage to occur can be hydrolock, irreversible damage to emissions devices, misfires, etc. Most times, engine replacement is required if ignored long enough.)

Re: Ok, heres the Rundown
hey, thanks alot. heres what i have done/have in vehicle
*Do i have to replace the heat sheilds on the back 3 plug wires?*
Air Filter-doing today with fram
Spark Plugs - 2 days ago bosch platinum 2
Ignition Wires-duralast
Oil & Filter0-1000 mi ago with mobil one
Why does everybody say not to use bosch products, i have tried to search for this but have come up with nothing.
The coil pack had rust on the post, just one of them, i cleaned it off with sand paper
Im using the green coolant and i dont believe any is disappearing
What are some early warning signs of the UIM/LIM problem?
thanks
