Urgent need to remove steering wheel on SSE with 10 button radio controls. I've removed all the buttons looking for fasteners which might hold it together. No joy. The horn buttons don't seem to be hiding any. Must get to steering shaft nut to remove wheel.
Project is to remove and inspect or ...

Re: No start manifold backfire, update and new info
Has been running fine for nearly 4 years now, but - - and this may apply to issues newly posted above. Car has been running fine except in cold weather it had episodes of no fire while cranking smartly. Acted like no fuel. When it warmed up a bit, it would light right off just as normal. I suspected ...

Re: Rear brake bleed process with Teves ABS system. '89 SSE
Follow up and enlightenment. After spending lots of time reading other car forums all relating to Teves 2 ABS systems (many other brands used them during late '80s and early '90s), I found one particular post describing exactly my symptoms which pointed to the accumulator. The post was from the ...

Rear brake bleed process with Teves ABS system. '89 SSE
Situation: Replaced rear wheel cylinders both sides. Did not disassemble ANYTHING else - brake shoes (80 to 90% thickness), springs, anything. Brakes worked perfectly going in except for leakage on LR cyl and starting to seep on RR cyl. Was able to R&R cyls without undoing anything else. Bled the ...

Re: No start manifold backfire
Update on NoShowCar problem fix. Now 3 years later and engine still runs fine. Correcting primary circuit short between C31 module and coil pack (in the cavity between them) was the answer. That required a close eyeball examination of all the parts. See description in post above. No computer ...

Re: LH mirror trim.
Thanks Jolly. That is the one on ebay and as you can see it is the wrong side to be useful to me. I'm checking to see if one of the sites at Car-Part has what I need. Thanks again.

Re: LH mirror trim.
ebay shows a RH mirror which is exactly correct except it is the wrong side for my problem. Link to that screen follows and is the only one on ebay like it. The others all look like the mirrors on my '90 Buick LeSabre which I recently let go.

LH mirror trim.
A few days ago, a car wash brush smacked my mirror flat against the door (to the front - that is, whacked from behind). The car wash owner has graciously agreed to fix it, but I'm trying to help locate the parts required. Everything seems to be undamaged except the plastic trim that covers the ...

Re: Sudden shut down (solved)
Recently completed about a 600 mile trip. No further glitches. Only issue was I got about 23 MPG avg. My old '90 Buick LeSabre with the same power train would get 29 on a trip quite consistently.

Re: Sudden shut down
Thanks to all the suggestions. I think I have this resolved. My first thought when battery connections were suggested was - no way. New battery, new cables (I thought) and recent major engine work. Well, I tried wiggling the battery connections and, by golly, it wiggled. Shouldn't! So I disconnected ...

Re: Sudden shut down
It could be many many things, none of which can be tracked down until the issue repeats. If it restarts without incident, I would just make a note of it until there is more information to consider. You can also scan for codes just to see if anything set.
Until then, worry not!

Re: Sudden shut down
how are your plugs/wires. did it die just once or is it a regular issue?
Engine and peripherals are only 10,000 miles old. Reman installed by previous owner. So plugs and wires are nearly new. All ign thoroughly inspected last week due to ign failure described in '87 - '91 Mech. & Maint. topics ...

Sudden shut down
Looking for clues as to what I should be looking for on my '89 SSE which simply turned off while driving at low speed in a neighborhood. Coasted to a stop in neutral. Placed in park and started normally and drove off like nothing happened. Now I can't trust it. When will it do this again? Oh yes ...

Re: No start manifold backfire
I just went through a similar problem. Car was running fine. Was in long line of traffic for 45 minutes. Car was not overheating, but I'm sure it was very hot under the hood. Shortly after leaving the line of traffic, on a side street, it started sputtering and just died. I figured hot fuel. 1 hour ...

Leather/vinyl on seats. Which panels are leather?
My '89 SSE is running great now, but I still have yet to fix the seat where it is torn (on the side bolster where it's easy to rub on it getting in). No one here can fix my seat, I know, but I'd like to maintain all the rest of it to last as long as possible. I know some parts of the seat are ...

Re: Squalling sound under load
The answer to the squalling is - blocked cat converter.
The ceramic core in the cat was badly broken up and many pieces turned sideways to the flow, effectively blocking the flow at maybe 80 to 90%. Ran OK at low speeds, but as the back pressure built up with application of throttle, the exhaust ...

Re: Swap front seats?
Got the shop manual today and learned that the two seats are not the same, but may yet be interchangeable. The difference is that the lumbar bladder air pump is in the right seat only, but feeds both seats. So the electrical plugs would be different on each side.
My question now is, can the seat ...

Squalling sound under load
My (new to me) 89 SSE is a splendid car and drives very nicely, but . . . . .
When I bought the car and drove it to a nearby town for a set of tires and a little local driving, it ran perfectly for about 40 or 50 miles. Then I filled the tank and within 2 miles it started making a squalling sound ...

Swap front seats?
I'd like to swap my front seats since the driver's seat shows more wear. They look to be identical, all the same controls and functions. However, I see underneath that they appear to be a right and a left based on the location of one of the visible motors. Are they interchangable? I have ordered a ...
