Longevity of Bonneville

Post by grweldon »

My wife currently drives a 2000 SE which has given great service even though she has abused it severely. I think it has about 180K miles on it and still runs great.

My Boss has a 2002 SLE for sale with 270K miles. Most of these are highway miles. The car looks and runs great. He said the transmission was replaced at about 100K miles. My daughter loves this car and he said he would sell it to me for about $500 under the Kelly Blue Book price. My boss has told me that he has used the factory recommended 5W-30 oil it's entire life and the service technician just recommended that he switch to 10W-30 because he said it's using a bit now.

My question is this: How many more miles could I possibly expect to get out of this car? I know it's a wide open question, but I'd hate to steer my daughter wrong with a purchase like this.

Thanks for your replies

It would depend on the price, and it would have to be very low for me to even consider it.

Bonnevilles can be had for quite cheap here in Michigan, but I don't know where you are so it might be different...

2000 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi - $3850 153,000 miles

2003 pontiac bonneville mint condition - $4999 110,000 miles

Check your local Craigslist and see what there is on there.

For me to honestly consider an '02 SLE with almost 300,000 miles on it, the price would have to be quite a bit less then $4,000

Agreed. It would have to be $3500 or less, to offset the repairs it's going to need. On a 7 year old car with almost 300k, it's going to need some TLC at some point, whether it's now or later.

A friend of mine traded his SSEI in (Year escapes me but I think it was an 02) and his had almost 400,000 miles on it. All highway miles however.
