Bonneville Center Reflector Disassembly/Restoration

Post by 20SSEi00 »

Has anyone ever tried opening up on of these? My GXP center reflector is delaminated and cracked in several spots pretty bad. Water fills it up when it rains and it doesn’t drain out. I’d like to open mine up to clean it. Anyone know how to open one up? Also toying with the ideas of maybe using a center reflectors outer lens to make a mold so I can reproduce lenses with epoxy to replace my cracked one. Another idea possibly is to make the center reflector lighted. Another owner has done something like that in the past, thinking about trying it with more modern lighting technology. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

These are pressed together and opening them up will likely destroy them.

The best "restoration" I've seen is someone taping off the black lines on a non GXP set and spraying on a coat of black to make all the lines black again. But this is a really tough way to do that as well.

Wonderful. So basically I’m f****d then. My 2nd GXP reflector came in the mail, so this one’ll be a test mule. Any suggestions for posting images on here? Seems Photobucket is out of the question. I’d like to post pics as I go. Hopefully be helpful to others if they want to try the same thing.

Ended up not needing to cut it open from the back to clean the gunk behind the red reflectors. Used 2 flathead screwdrivers to lift the top part of the reflectors up just enough to get behind them. Scrubbed them clean by bending one of the spiral brushes I use to clean my spray gun with at an angle. Worked better than I thought. Now it’s just repairing my outer lens and making a reproduced copy to replace my cracked stock one. Need to make a mold first.
