Reddish Pink Break Dust

Post by retroren1 »

I have a strange thing going on with my 2000 Eldo. The right rear wheel is coated with a fine reddish pink powder. I assume it is brake dust from the semi-metallic pads. Two things confuse me:

1) Why is it only happening on the right rear?

2) Why after changing discs and pads (semi-metallic) all the way around, I still have the same reddish pink powder on the right rear only?

There is not even a hint of this colored powder on any of the other 3 wheels. Any ideas as to what is causing it? The brakes function perfectly. any suggestions? Try ceramic pads?

I would check to make sure that that brake isn't dragging, and that you aren't leaking brake fluid

Semi-metallic pads leave more noticeable brake dust than other materials, such as ceramic, but usually on both sides.
If you cleaned and lubricated the sliding pins and surfaces, but didn't have the rotors resurfaced or replaced, then it's possible that the RR is now functioning better than before and some rust has been wearing off the rotor surface, creating the pinkish dust.
As RJolly87 suggested, I'd eliminate sticking brakes as a cause.
It may not be that the RR sticks and generates dust. It can be that the LR isn't functioning, so that wheel doesn't create any brake dust.
I'd jack up the rear, have someone apply the brakes a few times and make sure neither side is hanging up due to an internally collapsed brake hose or sticking piston, etc.
Next, have the assistant apply and release the parking brake and check the rear wheels again.
Repeat once or twice to rule out an intermittently sticking PB cable or mechanism.
