Oil pressure drops

Post by omargadea12 »

Hello everyone, just yesterday at a stop light my oil pressure gauge drop to the red line. When i press on the gas it comes back up on a delay and the engine icon comes on. Any thoughts, thanks.

can you verify that the pressure is actually dropping with a mechanical pressure gauge? Or was there an audible knock or ticking from the engine when pressure dropped? A lot of times, the oil pressure sending unit can fail and cause inaccurate readings, so it's always best to verify with a mechanical gauge.

It's most likely the sending unit. You should look into getting it replaced soon before it starts to leak oil.

hi, my 96 oil pressure would be low on idle and increase with rpm but it never hit the red!!!!

If it was my ride, I would make this my first priority - check oil viscosity and level also - do you have access to another 3800 to switch the senders?

also, are you noticing an increase of top end chatter? you can pull the oil filler cap and see if oil is making its way up to the valve/rocker assembly

I replaced my oil sending sensor and made the mistake of trying to start it when the car was still jacked up and now a code flashes inflatable situation. now I must get it hooked up to a computer and have the codes cleard before it will start. don't be an idiot like me haha.i have oil pressure now.

is there anyone who knows how to clear codes on a 94 Pontiac Bonneville 3.8 liter or does this have to be done by computer?

If you have codes, simply clearing them will not allow the car to start. There is something else going on. Is it possible that you got the wrong sender that's not sending power to the fuel pump? Check that your new sender has the same number of pins as the old one.
