changing the fuel pump on my 97se help and vids

Post by 97Prodigy »

So i haven't found a video on here that shows a step by step process on how to change it, plenty of word instruction though. So i figured why not.
Ive already ordered in the the fuel pump and sender assembly, now im just waiting. pretty much just been :banghead: for a couple of weeks trying to figure this out.

Get a can of starting fluid (or carb cleaner):

and another person. Pull off the "hose" that connects the air filter to the throttle body. While your "help" tries to start the the car, spray the "starting fluid" into the throttle body. If it starts immediately. it is probably a fuel starvation issue. Then, if you haven't replaced your fuel filter yet, do that first. If you have replaced the fuel filter, or replace it and it still is giving you trouble, my guess is it could be the fuel pump. My pump has 300+k miles on it and so far it's working just fine. Keep us posted. - BC

Got the new assembly in, got a chance to raise the car up, but before i started taking things apart i was checking everything i was going to have to mess with.
First thing is that the previous owner of the car was an older lady, who had a hitch welded on so she could tow around her power chair. problem is that its welded straight under the exhaust. and i have the single exhaust with all the turns. so i couldn't let the exhaust down.
Second the rubber fill hoses would not come off no matter how hard i tried.
So pretty much the tank was not coming down. Any suggestions?

Cut the hoses and replace them. If you don't need the hitch for anything, cut it off too. Try to save it so you can resell it, but if you can't, oh well.

If you do go after the fuel pump and you didn't see my thread, be careful with the bolts holding the tank straps. The bolts should be fine but GM used those thin little metal tabs with threads on one side instead of proper nuts. They're almost guaranteed to break due to rust buildup on the threads of the bolts.

I run fuel injector cleaner and mystery oil every 3 months and never had a problem with
a fuel pump.
