Help with radio please

Post by IanRosean »

I have the 2000 Pontiac Bonneville SE, regular crappy radio with the CD player and tape input, I would like to install an aftermarket radio I have read mixed things online and I am really confused as to what to buy. Pretty much I'm just looking for a harness that will allow me to install the single DIN radio I have for the cheapest amount of money. I'm not too worried about chimes or anything like that honestly. Any input is greatly appreciated guys.

I have one of those super basic adapters in my '02 SE, was there when I got the car but the took the stereo. I soldered up my aftermarket stereo harness to it and plugged it in, works perfect, I have zero complaints. I couldn't tell you what brand it is or anything though, but of course I don't have chimes... don't miss them either

Thanks, but do I need to do any kind of special wiring or anything like that to get it to work ? or just splice the harness with the radio wires and plug it in ?

Just splice together the aftermarket harness with your harness from your stereo and plug it in to the factory plug. You will also need to cut out some plastic at the back of the dash to make room for the new head unit as it is too shallow, be careful doing this as the wire harness runs right there and can be cut if you aren't careful.

Mine is an SE also, I do have an SSEi as well, link to a great restoration thread in my sig if you want to check it out.

As for the plasti dip it is very easy! Just make sure what you are working on is clean then tape off any areas you don't want to get dipped and spray away. When done just peel / wipe off any overspray and you are all set.

Just make sure you connect the power antenna wire from the head unit to the antenna enable terminal on the dock and lock or your antenna module will not power up and there will be no reception.

I do remember having to add a power wire to mine, not sure if it was normal or not since someone did some hacking in there with aftermarket stuff.

I seen in a different thread somewhere somebody ran the the Switched / Constant wire to the Dimmer or something like that ? I'm not sure, I have never installed a car radio in my life LOL

I'm pretty good with electronics though as I work in the IT field so I'm trying my best
