mildewy smell when I turn on my air

Post by ballstatefan05 »

Hey all ~

I have this odd smell that comes out of the vents when i turn on my air. Its a damp/mildew smell. I just had the condenser replaced a couple weeks ago. Any ideas on whats going on or how to get rid of it?

Happened in my car when I turned the air on for the first time in a while, then it all blew out.

Mine has that smell all the time, the whole car does really. Even after fixing the leaks and drying the hole car out.

Sort of smells like wet dog too. . .

Have you replaced your cabin air filter ever? Lol

You can also spray some odor neutralizer (Fresh Wave) on the cabin filter if it's clean. That would be where I'd start.

Or put an air freshener inside the blower motor. XD

This just started happening after the condenser replacement. Its been really hot here so I use the air quite a bit..

There is a panel in the cowl area near the windshield, under the hood, two little tabs holding down, under there is the cabin filter. Some previous owner may have left the filter out. But they are readily available at your local parts store.

Could be a plugged A/C drain as well. It's accessed from under the car, on the passenger side of the firewall. It's just a small rubber tube, might not hurt to stick a small screwdriver or something in there to ensure it's not clogged.

It does really help to have one. 03+ didn't get a bracket, just got a filter tossed in there. Go to your favorite parts store and get a filter with the bracket (might have to order it). It's like $20, and it keeps the dust and pollen out of your car and your lungs.

Will this one fit? I see in the reviews someone installed this one in an 04 Bonneville...

It made my car get a lot less dusty! The dash stays clean for weeks at a time.

Also, be sure that you actually disposed of the water in your car. The carpets have a 1.5" - 2" thick polyurethane cushion / sponge underneath that i had to pull up & squeeze out. Doesn't hurt to drive around with the AC & blower at full for a while to make it dry, especially if you are not getting to much sun.

I just drove 30 min with AC blasting, when I got home I looked under the car for AC condensation drip..there wasn't any, but then again I'm not a weather girl and I'm not sure of conditions that would make my AC have condensation.... :dontknow: I'm having my oil changed on Wed. I'll have them check the drain hose for clogs anyway...

Should be dripping water out pretty good, no matter how humid it is. The more humid, the more water dripping.

ok guys, so I had my oil changed yesterday and I asked them to check the drain hose for the A/C..they couldn't find it!! :dontknow: Any tips on helping them locate it. I don't think the guy changing my oil had much experience under his belt..although he did great with the oil change itself..

Thanks,
Jaime
