Where can I purchase or rent a KR scanner? I want to see where I'm at beforehand so I know what I can and cant do. I would rather have some sort of OBDII scanner if that would work, because if I bought a gauge i would have to sacrifice one of my vents, and I like my flowing air.

Also, what levels of KR are 'safe'? Like how much KR would make it impossible to run a 3.5 pulley with supporting mods?

0 KR is always the best possible result, but 1* or so is relatively *safe*. And it depends on the day and the other mods, and most importantly the tune. If you have any KR, a 3.5 is going to make it worse...

I know, so i want to try to get it as close to 0 as possible. I'm not sure i want to go all the way down to a 3.4 so I think a 3.5 would be alright. I'm planning on doing every support mod I can before I even buy the pulley, though, to prevent as much KR as possible.

Definitely not a bad plan. I ran a 3.6 and had minimal KR with that, with quite a few supporting mods. You're rarely ever going to hit 0 KR at WOT, but minimizing it during the powerband is what's important. You'll see some KR around the shifts, that's to protect the transmission from getting shocked too hard.

And the Aeroforce really is the right tool for the job. Yes it means you have one less vent, but the other 3 pick up the slack, each pair shares a common plenum behind them. You don't lose flow, and it makes sense on so many more levels. It was by far the best mod I did to my 03, bar none.

For a scanner I know there is an app for Android (Torque I believe it's called), and along with a Bluetooth OBDII scanner, you can probably scan for KR. I'm not 100% sure as I went the AeroForce route (Ed's right, you don't lose much, unless you put one in all your vents).

Also, depending on how you car's previous owner treated it (like running it hard on 87 instead of 91), you may have a difficult time getting rid of knock, even with the supporting mods. But, if it was treated well, you shouldn't have too many problems. I know this because mine was abused by its previous owner, and running a 3.6 pulley in the winter netted me around 8*+ of KR, and that wasn't even at WOT.

The thing that really bothers me is the price on this thing. I would gladly buy one if it were much cheaper. Is it really worth the $250 price tag? I

I wish someone would just invent a scanner that just read KR and was affordable! Ha I'm dreaming, though, unless I'd go out and do it myself.

Torque Pro for android is $5, and the bluetooth adapter for the OBDII port is 20ish on amazon. I have that and it works like a charm, and will read KR and a lot more. It's worth the investment, and is much better than the aeroforce if you're on a budget. The aeroforce is a better gauge overall, but for the price you can't beat Torque.

I never got Torque to read KR. Not sure what I am or am not doing right...


Ohhhh, got it. You have to go to: Settings > Manage extra PIDs/Sensors > hit Menu > Add Predefined Set > Pontiac/GM/Opel/Vauxhall. Then it adds KR and a bunch of other stuff. Perfect.

Do you need an android product to do this?

IIRC the iPhone 5 or the newest iOS doesn't work with the BT adapters, so basically yes, lol.

Dang. Now that I'm looking at the Aeroforce website and looking at all it does, I'm kind of looking into possibly buying one, but more than likely it would have to be used, since I'm so cheap.

What I would probably keep it on is Horsepower and KR readings all the time.

If I do end up buying it, how do plug it in? does it just go right into the OBDII port and its good to go? Or do I have to mess with wires and end up ruining the $250 piece of plastic?

Plugs right into the OBDII port. Simple and easy.

I have a ScanGauge II which does everything the aeroforce does but it is rectangular in shape so doesn't blend in so easily, but it is much easier to read as the display is larger. It also scans and clears check engine light codes. These gauges are great for troubleshooting and they really tell you a lot about what is going on with your car, yes they are worth $250.

I loved my Aeroforce, probably going to get another one for my next car (Needs a different aeroforce due to the CAN-bus protocols). If you'd have been quicker, I just sold mine for $150.

For DD duty, I had mine showing Coolant temp (Don't want to get on it till 160*, when it goes into closed loop and knock is processed) and Trans temp, just to monitor that. Then when I wanted to go fast, it was usually LTFT (Long Term Fuel Trim) and KR.

Works just fine for me as well Best purchase I've ever made. And many apps work with the adapter as well. Shows absolutely everything you need to know down to BHP or fuel trim levels.

Look around on the more frequent 3800 forums like GPF and you can usually find used Aeroforces for sale for like 175 bucks.

just got the Torque app, added the KR option and it works great. always at 0.0, except some WOT highway runs got a couple degrees (false KR hopefully, but it did get up to 7.4 once.)

HOWW. I only get zero on frigid nights with 93 octane. Going anywhere near WOT under normal situations has gotten me as high as 9 degrees on 87 and 5-6 on 93.

Mine does the same thing. 0 wide open. But will hit 3-5 on heavy part throttle.
