Thinking of buying a 2004 GXP and wondering if it requires less maintenance than my 2000 SSEI?

Can of worms has now been opened. Long story short: haters say don't do it, lovers say ignore the haters. Personally I say stick with what you have. You can find a lot with the search function on GXP vs SSEi.

GXP will definitely cost more to maintain no doubt, possibly a LOT more! If you can do the work yourself though it is just a pain and a lot of time. I only had mine for a little while and it was a bad bad deal.... I would do it all again in a heartbeat if I was able to keep it though.

This. My GXP wasn't any worse than the SSEi financially because I was doing ALL the work myself. Pay somebody else to fix your car, and the SSEi will be cheaper.

At some point however you do have to consider what your time and aggravation is worth. I had time and didn't mind working on the car, so it was all good!

Also though you have to chance the probability of N* problems. If you've done a short list of things on your L67 already, namely intake gaskets, that engine won't ask too much from you beside regular PM. Northstars however are like rolling a pair of dice. Like said above, depends how easy you get frustrated and how much of a DIY guy you are.

If it runs good, maintenance is marginally more expensive, mostly being that tires cost more, it takes 8-ish quarts of oil, other parts are more expensive and harder to find than the SSEi (brakes, suspension, body and interior parts). It really depends on what you want....

And for the record, I wouldn't say the N* is an unreliable engine. Maybe in the scope of a 3.8 it has a few nuances, but then so does the 3800. The N* is just more "needy" as the miles pile up and then parts are a little more expensive, and labor (if you're not doing it yourself), is a bit more due to my analogy above. It's a big, top heavy 4 cam engine stuffed in an engine compartment really designed for a large V6.

Thanks a lot guys for all your inputs on the subject. I personally think they're both great cars but I think i'll stick with my SSEi. :)

That is a wise decision. The 3800 is one of the cheapest, easiest, and parts plentiful engines out there, so if it's the cheapest, a N* is gonna be more to maintain $ for $.
