Won't Shift Up when W.O.T.

'97 SE

When I put the pedal to the metal she won't shift out of 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. The RPM hits around 4900 and then the engine cuts out (about 4x/sec). It feels like the governor is activating, limiting the revs. If I back off the pedal about 1/2" it shifts up to the next gear and runs perfectly, and then I can stomp it WOT (wide open throttle) again. It runs/shifts perfectly other than this.

I don't know when this problem started (I seldom drive this car) but I did replace the MAF sensor (mass airflow) a while back. The part no. was different from my orig. New part: Delphi AF10125.
Old part: 19112538 (maybe)
Could this have anything to do with it, or is it more likely a transmission issue?

I appreciate any help and suggestions.

OK, here's the answer: The MAF was causing the problem. I disconnected it, took her for a drive. Idled like crap, but at WOT she went right up to 5200 RPM and shifted to the next higher gear. I stuck my old MAF back in and it runs perfectly now.

Part causing problem: Delphi #AF10125 Old part (good): AFH50M-04 (written on part)
