oil pressure gauge
I'm having some sort of a problem with my oil pressure gauge. For some reason it stays on pegged out on 120. When the car is started it acts as if everything is fine and travels up and down normally but then goes all the way to 120 and doesn't move until the car is turned off. I'm figuring it may be a wire shorting but I have no idea where to start.
Chillin n the 2001 Bonneville S SEi and loving it !

Re: oil pressure gauge
Basically you need a new oil pressure sending unit. Not expensive, about $30 and available at AutoZone, O'Reilly's, Advance Auto Parts, Carquest....pretty much anyone.
I entered your car info in your profile on www.rockauto.com and came up with this unit: These are good and I beleive the brand I put on my car: STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS PS309 Thread Size - NPT: 1/4" x 18 Thread; Blade Terminals; Terminal Gender: Male; Direct OE Replacement; Number of Terminals: 3; Connector Gender: Female
Alternate/OEM Part Number(s): 12562858, 12574309, 12584940, 24504548, 24508730, A1804, D1807A, D1821A
There are other makes for your car, but they all run around $27 to $30 on rockauto.com so retail stores will be in the same price range.Go in and tell them you need an OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT for your year model car. Look at any pictures they bring up on the part description. The part you need screws in just above the oil filter and has a wire that connects to it via a weather pack connector I believe.
The one I bought for my 03 SE had thread sealant on the threads already. If the one you buy has no thread sealant, put some on the threads ONLY. You don't need much at all.
This is a common part to need replacing on these cars. Once you install the new sending unit, be sure to reconnect the wire to it or it won't work. Start back up and you should see a much more reasonable PSI. These cars have pretty high oil pressure so it may read a good ways past half way at operating rpm and at 40 to 50 idling.

Re: oil pressure gauge
Get an AC Delco or Delphi unit. All the others aren't accurate. It's a bad sending unit, plain and simple.
Bye Bye:
