2000 Bonneville SE Audio Upgrade ~Pictures Added, Finished~

I have a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville SE with a 6 speaker setup, including the tweeters on the front doors. My first question is if I am purchasing a new radio receiver, would I need to get a 6 channel output to hear everything perfectly?

Also, this car just confuses me. Is there a stereo amp in the car for the non Bose trim level? I did not find one behind the rear seats in the trunk. If there isn't an Amp, will i be able to replace the factory radio and have enough power to power all of the speakers?

I have replaced the front driver door speakers with "Kicker DS65 6.5" 200W 2 Way Car Audio Speakers"http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 15Y0AD5205 speakers and those work just fine.

What I want to do is try and get a "Clarion CX501 Double-DIN CD/Bluetooth/USB Receiver" http://www.amazon.com/Clarion-CX501-Dou ... 780&sr=1-4 to replace the stock radio. I already have a "PAC C2RGM24 Class 2 Radio Replacement G" http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002J ... PDKIKX0DER picked out to keep the charms.


Main question, what problems will I run into? I know I will lose steering wheel control, but will the Clarion power all of the speakers in the car?



Front door speakers are 4 Ohm.
Rear deck speakers are 8 Ohm.
Front Tweeters~ not sure.

It depends... technically you have a 4-speaker set 2x (the tweeter + door speaker are connected together, tweeter just has inline cap to block lower frequencies) + 2x 6x9s. The SSEI have true 6-speaker set 2x(Front: Tweeter + Door Speaker), 2x (Rear door), 2x 6x9s.

Now, to get the best sound you should amp your speakers, it just depends on their power handling, specifically RMS voltage and impedance) try to match that to what your head unit outputs.

Other-wise like me you can run a 4-channel amp (I have 6.5 inch components for front (6.5 inch door woofer + 1 inch dome tweeter (had to custom mount it in the tweeter housing), and two 6x9s in the back.

But, if you wanted just to use the amp built in on the head unit, I guess you could wire the front tweeter + door speaker together, but if you replace the factory tweeter make sure it has some sort of filtering capicator or passive/active crossover so you dont get low notes to the tweeter, and run the rear 6x9s to the headunit.

Oh and about the steering control you would need something like the Metra ASWC-1 to retain steering wheel controls.

I have a Kenwood 5 channel amp running with the stock head unit through a line out converter.

Polk Audio components up front.
5 Way Pioneer 6X9's in back.
Pioneer 10 in trunk.

Pounds when I need it to, shines when I want it to.

I think the amplifier in your new HU should have no problem driving the factory speakers. You do not have the Bose amplifier, Just connect the correct wires from the speaker outputs on the HU to the wires on the PAc adapter. By the way, the PAC adapter you bought will not work for Bonnevilles. You need the C2R-GM32R unit. See the PAC website for more details. Okay, I ended up buying a package from Sonic Electronix and it worked out just fine. I'm happy.

I got a Clarion CX501 (head unit), American International GM-K422 (double din bracket), PAC C2R-GM32R (ribbon adapter & chimes)....

I had to dremel out quite a bit of plastic to get the new radio to fit correctly, with all of the wires. I have a few pictures that I took of the installation and the completion, which I will post here shortly.

After about 4 hours of careful dremeling, the plastic back and bottom has been removed. Notice the red anntenna adapter that is plugged in. This is what worked perfectly for me.

It's a very good idea to tape the wires together to save space and make it easier to fit the wires behind the dash. Blue chimes box can be seen on the right, and the aftermarket adapter is on the right in the white.

Thanks for helping me out guys. I tried to post as many pictures as possible to try and help out the next guy.

The antenna adapter that I got was supposedly a Euro, or volkswagen type, and it worked perfectly. Hardest part was getting my hand behind the radio to plug the radio antennas together.

If you guys have any questions, please ask. Sorry the pictures are so big, I wanted to make sure they were clear.

Oh, and the volume sounds good too. And I would recommend taping the chimes box quite a few times because the chimes are quite loud and annoying... With the sound dampened, it's much better.

Right now the radio isn't secured by anything but the trim around it, so that is the only thing left I have to adjust. I was thinking about just putting some pressure on the back of the radio to make it tight and center on the trim, and that would about be perfect..

I did go just slightly overboard on cutting out the plastic, but I figured it would only help me out. I was having problems trying to fit all of those wires, and the chimes box, all in that tight area. Not to mention get the radio to fit nicely behind the trim.

If I could do this project again, I would and I probably wouldn't change much. The amount of plastic cut made it nice and easy to slide in.

Hardest part by far was to plug the antenna adapter into the back of the radio... when the radio is installed in the dash. Because the adapter didn't have a cord to it, I had to reach my hand up behind the radio by the floor mats to try and push the adapter and radio together.
