Electrical connector on P/S pump?
What's this for? Rebuilt pump doesn't have it. Did I get the wrong part?

Re: Electrical connector on P/S pump?
I thought it was a pressure switch that tells the pcm when to bump the idle due to high load.

Variable assist valve would be my guess, as my 94 SE has one. I could be wrong...others need to verify.

I have never seen a 3800 PS pump with an electrical connection. Pretty simple though. If your car has a wiring harness plug to connect to the PS pump. Then buy the pump with an electrical connection. Otherwise use the rebuilt pump you just bought.

Finding one appears to be a problem. And it's a miserable job to swap the pump-I don't want to do it twice.reb wrote:I have never seen a 3800 PS pump with an electrical connection. Re: Electrical connector on P/S pump?
At least in 95 it was called TV2, variable assist steering. IIRC there's a solenoid that varies the pressure to the rack.

Re: Electrical connector on P/S pump?
I don't think the rack has any electronic valving. It's not wired into the engine harness if it is. I honestly have to go take a look at my FSM again to be sure. I'll try and take a look when I get home from work.

Thanks, buddy. If someone here could come up with the part number for the pump, that'd be good, too.

2000+ has the connector on the rack and its part of the engine harness.95naSTA wrote:I don't think the rack has any electronic valving. It's not wired into the engine harness if it is. I honestly have to go take a look at my FSM again to be sure. I'll try and take a look when I get home from work.

Re: Electrical connector on P/S pump?
No connector at the rack, it's all at the pump on these models.
The solenoid is controled by the chime module (think pre-BCM). I've ran with and without it on my '93 SSEi, and honestly could not tell much difference. Leaving it disconnected will increase the feel permanently and will make the wheel slightly harder to turn in low-speed maneuvering. Not enough to worry about though.

Thanks. I'm gonna disconnect it today and see how it drives with and without.sandrock wrote:No connector at the rack, it's all at the pump on these models.

Did it turn on the CEL? Got smog coming up.

Re: Electrical connector on P/S pump?
Nope. CEL's come on only when there is a problem directly related to emissions. It's tied to the chime module anyways, so there is absolutely no PCM interaction (well, there is one path...there are two different speed outputs coming from the PCM. One strictly goes to the chime module, the other goes to the cluster, the cruise control module, and the ABS module IIRC), but it won't trip the light regardless.

Re: Electrical connector on P/S pump?
If these rebuild services still exist in your area. Perhaps you can have your existing pump w/electrical connection rebuilt. Or send it out for rebuild if time permits.

Re: Electrical connector on P/S pump?
I assume we are talking about the car in your signature '97 SE. My '97 SE is equipped with Magnasteer and there is a wiring harness/electrical connector on the rack. There is no connector on my pump. My car was built in March of '97.
