'02 Bonneville SE

Post by travisd »

Intermittent issue with my '02 SE. Most the time it starts right up and runs just fine, but every once in a while, when starting it starts, but dies instantly. I can get it started if I keep it floored and sometimes eventually get it going if I pop it into gear. The other thing it'll do is when driving down the road, cruise control on at 75, it'll just want to die. I can keep it running through a slow methodical pumping of the gas and then it'll take and if I floor it at that point she'll pull hard until it shifts and then it wants to die again. I drove it home today, a 50 mile trip, and about 40 of those miles were just like that. Then when I got home, it did just like I said earlier, won't start and stay running unless I've got it floored. I've cleaned the throttle body, and MAF, dumped a couple of bottles of fuel injector cleaner in it and I've changed the fuel pressure regulator. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Possible vacuum issue would be something I would be looking for. Check all vacuum lines for any splits or cracks.

If no vacuum leaks check the pressure of your pump it may be becoming weak. I don't see that you changed the fuel filter perhaps it has gotten clogged up.

Sorry, should've mentioned that the fuel filter was changed recently as well. I will focus on trying to find a vacuum leak. Really wish that whatever the issue is would just be broken all the time, can't stand these intermittent problems. One day, I'm proud as heck that the car runs and drives as good as it does with 325,000 miles on it and then a day like above and I'd leave it in the ditch if I could.

I just took my first opportunity to try a little troubleshooting on the bonneville today and as luck would have it, she started right up and ran like a top. I took a can of MAF cleaner and sprayed a few vacuum lines anyway, but it made no change, as expected. Because I've never checked my fuel pressure, what kind of number should I expect and is there a difference between running and not?
