00' bony se i think, gas milage suffering

Post by KNM »

im suffering on gass milage.
275mi/tank,
tires are inflated just fine , air filters are good. all seems well.

issues:
-when i get to about a quarter tank left my gas guage starts jumping.(how do i fix and how much?)
-how big is my gas tank? i filled up today almost (empty?) i filled over 16 gallons.

Help:
-what can i do or add to the car to get gass milage back up
- to i need to replace the sending unit for the gas guage to help with gass milage?

any and all help is apreciated.

and questions shoot them to me, i am new on this; and would like to make this car last for alot longer then tommorow at least 5yrs.

let me know,
thankyou,
KNM.

I believe the tank is 18.5, thats just off the top of my head, somebody else will verify. the fuel sender is another common issue. you can easily do this yourself if you have plenty of patience. use the search and you'll find a tutorial and the YouTube video links.

how are your plugs and wires?
how clean is your Mass Air Flow sensor? (also known as MAF)
how new is your fuel filter?

these are 3 of the biggest things that can affect your fuel mileage negatively, by my math your at about 16 mpg which is wayy to low for your car unless you run everywhere with your foot to the floor which i doubt

yeah i dont floor it every where.
what should i look for when it comes to wires.
the car has 82k miles.
i have no idea if the wires are good. or plugs, or fuel filter.
do i have to drop the gas tank to do the sending unit?

i have acces to be able to do all this work myself.
i would really like to save that big bills for bigger issues, so i would rather do all this myself.
if i do all that on my own what is the average price for all that stuff to be replaced?

thankyou so much for any and all other help,
KNM

Inspect the wires for damage, burns, exposed wires, etc. Plugs are cheap, maybe three bucks each or so. I recommend doing the wires at the same time if needed. Fuel filter....not sure on the price but the one on my last GP was around $15-$20.

Id message harofreak00 about getting the sending unit part. I bought mine off eBay for about $30, and I believe he has the same ones stocked up. as far as the procedure to replace the sending unit, its fairly simple, but requires patience and some elbow grease.

Here's the write up http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... f=18&t=456

Winter blend gas is crap. Add in ethanol and fuel mileage sucks. I wish gas station had to tell you if ethanol is in the fuel, I'd shop around. I bought gas at an Exxon for my 2001 Lesabre and watched the fuel mileage numbers on the dash go down. Got fuel at BP and up it goes. I don't know if it has to do with brand or the "may contain up to 10% ethanol". Alcohol is for drinking and engines built around it. Corn is for food.

expect the wires for any damage at all, like one of the previous posters said, you can pull the plugs and inspect them while your at it

the fuel filter is about 15 bucks and is easy to do, its got a clip on one side and two opposite direction nuts, youll need two wrenches both of which are metric, be careful to not twist the fuel line when your doing this as the two nuts will wanna fight you before they break loose

a bad fuel filter can still deliver fuel just fine but rob you of your fuel economy, but as mentioned above it also doesnt help that your dealing with winter blend fuel which is just complete garbage

first off go out to a parts store an have them put it on a battery tester to see if its the battery not holding a charge or the alternator not charging the battery

other than that i would say plugs, wires, fuel filter and sending unit might as well be done if you want to, cause those all are routine maintenance on these cars

00beast has a maintenance list floating around here somewhere :btruestory:
