2000 Bonnie Weird RPM's

Post by Orbitz »

Hi all. Been having some strange problems with the Bonnie. When going up a hill at a constant speed (say 50 KMs an hour) the idle will go up and down 100 or 200 every second or so. There is no rhyme or reason to it. I recall it doing it hot and cold. I have had problems with the coil pack, it was causing it to studder something terrible, so I replaced it with a used part. The used part took care of the problem, but then she started stalling whenever it suited her. Thanks to you guys, I figured out it was the crankshaft position sensor, so I had that replaced and she runs fun again, other then this problem. One mechanic I took the car too said to have the CPS 're-learn' done, but two other mechanic's say if the CPS needed a re-learn done, it would throw a code, and there are no past, present, or pending codes coming up (local dealerships want $100+ to do the re-learn, so if it isn't necessary, I would rather save that). I notice sometimes too when I start it up, it she die a split second later. If I turn the key, she will fire right up again and act like nothing is wrong.

Plugs and wires were done last Christmas (both AC/Delco's, as per recommendations from this group), as was the fuel filter. Car has 155,500 KM's (around 96,000 miles) and was meticulously maintained by the original/last owner, and I try to do the same.

Any help is appreciated, thanks everyone!!

Not sure who recommended the ACdelco wires but most of us would have said NAPA premium Beldin wire. But the Delcos are ok.

When going up hill, give it a bit more gas so the trans shifts out of converter lockup, does the surging stop?

The Torque Converter Clutch solenoid (TCC) has been a known problem in with the transmissions.

And I dont believe the CPS needs a relearn, theres nothing for it to learn.

Thanks to you both. I will check the MAF sensor to make sure it is clean, as per the recommendation in the link, but if it is the TCC, is this replaceable, or would a new transmission or a rebuild of the current transmission be required? How long would I have with this transmission? Any advise? Thanks again
