I have noticed that my car makes a pinging or dinging noise at idle. To me it always sounded like it came from the passenger side of the engine, but once I open the hood to investigate the noise I can no longer hear it.
Tonight I walked around the car and noticed that if I listened to the exhaust I could clearly hear the same noise. It almost sounds like something is lightly hitting the exhaust pipe. The noise is very in tune with the engine.
The car runs great and doesn't have any codes. I also can't read knock with my intercepter, but I don't think that is my problem.
Do you think it could just be an exhaust leak?

I'm guessing you're not talking about the injector tick either?

I know this thread is a dinosaur, but my car sounds exactly the same, maybe a little quieter. Always hard to tell with cam mic's of course.

Mine still worries me that's it's something internal, but I have put over 20,000 miles on without an issue, so that helps settle my mind. I'm thinking its an exhaust leak.

Shouldn't be much valvetrain noise on an OHC engine, but it always is possible. If it's an erratic, occasional pinging, it could just be the exhaust, due to the heat, expanding (much like it contracts after you shut it off and it makes those metallic noises). Could be a noisey injector(s), noisey purge solenoid, squeaky idler pulley (you did note you could hear it on the passenger side), rattling heat shield, etc, etc...

possably something rattling around in the cat? or does it just sound like its coming from underneath the hood?
