I am planning on blaming the EGR valve and I was wondering if cleaning it was possible or if replacement is the only option? This is a 1993. It looks like from my searches I tear it off, spray it out, oil it, new gasket, and go...Just wondering if anyone had any other opinions on this? Thanks

Failed emissions test...cleaning EGR valve?
Well the car failed the emissions test. I find it really shocking and odd, initially failed the first time. So I sprayed off the mass airflow sensor, and put new plugs in it. After doing that it ran the best its ever ran and even chirps the tires taking off, which it NEVER did before. But upon the re test it failed EVEN WORSE!

Re: Failed emissions test...cleaning EGR valve?
I'd turn it over and spray TB or carb cleaner into the ports and let it soak for a while. Our van was throwing an EGR code and that is essentially how I made it work right again.
Can you be specific on how it failed? We might be able to point you in a different direction if there is one.

It'd be funny if it was the because the OBD2 cable doesn't fit the OBD1 port.J Wikoff wrote: Can you be specific on how it failed?

What state/province are you in? And, do you have a picture of the results?

Here in Oregon, anything after 1974 gets the sniffer test. All OBD II gets the plug in check. They all have to have no CEL lights on.
