Service air bag light

Post by pontiacfanatic »

I got into my car yesterday and my service air bag came on and I'm not quite sure why. I have looked at other posts on here andmost say the car did other things also like service vehicle or other things like that but none of that comes on, just the service air bag light and I'm not quite sure what to do to fix the problem. Also, the car has been turned off multiple times and turned back on and it still keeps coming on so idk if i should unplug the battery to try and reboot the cars computer or just unplug the fuse for a little bit and plug it back....im not sure. Does anyone have any ideas or experienced this problem before.

You have to get it scanned by either a dealer or a shop with a scanner. Our GXP had the air-bag light on for a while, it ended up being the impact sensor in the front bumper, which was a dealer-only fix, as they have to program it with a Tech II. Diagnostic fee was like $30, part/labor was like $200.

this is my own experience, make sure the connection is not loose under yours or the passenger front seats,

mine is from the passenger side, when ever something slips under the seat it hits the connection and goes off.

Interesting, I had a front impact sensor go bad myself (05 GXP), had the dealer scan the system which returned a code indicating the front sensor was bad. I ordered the impact sensor on line, forget from where, it was almost $100.00 for the sensor, went home and replaced it myself. Took care of the problem and it's been fine since. Definitely did not have to be programmed with a Tech ll. Perhaps this would seem obvious but the dealer did mention that as long as that light is on, the airbag system is disabled.

That is because the current code cleared itself after 3 consecutive successful ignition cycles (turning off your dash indicator), without a repeat failure, and then cleared the history files after 40 consecutive successful ignition cycles without a file.

With a TechII, it could be cleared and erased completely on the spot after replacement.

I echo the comment regarding the front bumper sensor. This fault was appearing on my 2005 GXP upon my intial test drive.
The GM dealership replaced mine upon me negotiating the final purchase price. Problem fixed. :)

I beleive this particualr sensor is common among all H-bodies, which could be a benefit for pricing and availabilty.

Hopefully this is the fix in your case too.
