installing HUD in non supercharged bonnie

Post by razmatazz »

Any one have any info or have tried putting in a HUD in a Bon that did not have it originally. iam curious if it is as simple and mounting it and wire tapping. or do i have to put a whole mess of stuff in order for it to work. i got a seller selling one for 50 bucks. Yes i know i need a special windshield for it.

I used the reflection from the '86 windshield to see my LG3 oil pressure gauge before the swap, nothing special about that windshield... except everything was backward when it was reflected. The old LeSabre doesn't have anywhere convenient to put gauges. It was usually visible during the day except when the sun was in my eyes.

There is a slight difference in windshields for HUD cars. IIRC, it is a layer of some coating above the HUD to help it reflect properly, a non-HUD windshield would cause a double/blurry image AFAIK.

I'll bet that you could find a section of that coating somewhere... Now I'm curious as I also wanted to put the HUD from Mr. Rusty into Mr. NotRusty.

.....searches internet.....

Nope. A wedge-shaped plastic film between the two layers of glass prevents the double image. Well, she needed a new windshield on Mr. NotRusty anyway...

The '93 stuff I have is probably too different to be of use to you, sorry :dontknow:

edit: I have the '98 CSMs i can look into

well i knew something would have to be done to the windshield. i was more curious if i got the HUD if i had to do any special wiring (buy sensors) or do i just connect it to wires that are already installed, and if i cut into the dash to install it if i have to worry about cutting and wires and ect. or is it just hollow underneath the dash.

I know its been done in the W-bodies... IIRC they had most everthing already there... ClubGP and W-body.com search should give you an idea of where to start... I would assume that they would be simmilar process between the Bonnie and a W Body. I dunno if someone can verify if the harness is already there or not. as for the glass yeah you can get a new HUD specific windshield, there are aftermarket HUD kits you can probably get the piece that sticks to the glass and make it work but i don't think it will be as clear as the HUD specific glass.

may want to consider aftermarket HUD's... havnt looked in a while but they are out there.

HUD specific glass has a thin wedge layer (thinner at the top) within the glass. Not a coating, and not applied after manufacturing the glass. There is a remarkable difference in viewing between HUD and non-HUD. HUD glass will give a brighter image and will not be out of focus or 'ghosted'.

Non-HUD glass may be hard to use on bright days and will never show sharp features.

To do the swap properly, you need the dashboard trim, entire dashboard (yes, that's true), dash trim bezel, HUD, and control panel with harnesses. Your front seats must be removed before swapping the dash with the donor car. This is the primary reason very few have attempted the job. It's expensive, even with parts from a wrecker, and involves at least 2 days of work on the car. There are ample chances for errors in reassembly as well.

HUD cars have a totally different dash with a hump and pocket. It's not just the plastic trim piece at the base of the windshield that's different. There's much, much more to it.

I put HUD in my 2000 SLE, I had a SSEi to use parts off of. It was a full days job. The center console also has to be removed. Well worth it though, I actually just got done making a HUD harness for my GXP, in the SLE I replaced the whole harness behind the dash, in the GXP I am soldering in just the HUD harness. I used a stock windshield and had no issues seeing the display unless I was driving into a low bright sun. If you have any questions feel free to pm me.

My HUD is much clearer than your picture shows, likely because of your non-HUD windshield.

Still a cool project I might wanna take up someday. Just gotta find a donor SSEi around here that hasn't been stripped to the bone.

I sell HUD install kits that would have everything you need: HUD assembly, mounting bracket, wiring, switch, HVAC ducting, upper dash pad, etc...

That was also a bad picture, I was driving while I took it. But yes if I ever crack my windshield I would put a HUD one in.
