oil pressure

Post by dgleichner »

I think this may have been covered before, but, my oil pressure is reading up near 120 when driving, but comes down to 40 when idling. Is this a problem or do I need a new sensor??? Also, does running Mobil 1 have something to do with this?

Replace the sensor with an AC Delco and inspect the wiring.

The brand of oil you're running has nothing to do with it, provided you're running the proper weight.

I hear you on oil weight. I was at my parents' house this weekend and found I was a quart low, so I grabbed some from Dad's garage. A former Navy supply officer, his philosophy is that anything worth buying is worth buying in bulk quantities. Unfortunately, all he had on the shelf was about a dozen quarts of 10w-40. I poured some in because I didn't feel like going and buying any, but I noticed when I left to go home that the oil pressure was up around 80 until the engine warmed up to normal operating temperature, then it settled back down to the 40 range, where it normally sits. It's been in the normal range ever since, so I guess it just had to blend thoroughly with the 10w-30 that was already in there. I don't guess it'll hurt anything since I'm due for an oil change in a couple of weeks anyway.

It's right above the filter on the "oil filter adapter" the part that bolts to the block. There's an electrical connection coming out of it. You can't miss it.

You'll need a 1 and 1/16" deep well socket. Prepare to spend some time.

Here's the picture you asked for. The top adapter is meant for a Grand Prix and the bottom adapter is what yours should look like.
Hope this helps you out.

It's for the 2000+, but yours should be similar.
