new headlight bulbs

I got these bulbs from my friend.

I installed them today as well as a new fog light bulb.

I just wanted some opinions about these bulbs and if I should keep them or go for those bluish ones... Idrk.

Short of it is, Silverstar Ultra bulbs are junk packed in a pretty package with an expensive price tag. I wouldn't ever buy them, but let's face it, free is free and they do put out light, so in that sense you're fine but if you are really looking to improve your light output I recommend you check out that thread.

Another quick tip (also mentioned in the thread, but I'll put it here too): Don't buy bulbs with blue tinting. Basically, that's exactly what it is, tint. Does it really make sense to put any form of tint on something that's supposed to produce light? The brightest bulbs always look clear.

It seems that the 92-95's have better luck with longevity than the newer cars, at least for Silver Stars. However, the biggest thing is that you don't touch the glass of the bulb with bare skin, that really kills its life.

I have had SilverStar bulbs in my 96 SE for close to 4 years now with no issues. As far as lights with a blue tint goes, they do not put out as much light as a clear bulb. I have found that on dark country roads that bulbs with a slight blue tint do seem to reflect of the side of a cop car farther than regular bulbs.... maybe it was just my good luck

The grease on your fingers causes them to burn out faster. That being said. Ed's right they don't last as long on the newer cars.
My 97 never had one go out. 02.....2 months after I put them in. Back to a more stock bulb.

That's quite true, blue light scatters more than yellow or white. One reason why many perceive an improvement in vision with them is because of reflection from greater distances, but as you've noticed, you actually end up seeing less.

I just got 3 dual packs of 9005 bulbs. These are the ones a step below ultra. There for the highs I'm assuming do to searching. So I put them in also.

Oh I put in a newer passenger side headlight too. My old one had been patched up a bit.

I hope you didn't pay retail for those! For the retail price of 9006/9005 SilverStars, HIR low/high beam bulbs will blow those out of the water for light output. SilverStar low beam = 1050 lumens. HIR low beam = 1875 lumens. About $112 shipped for a full set of HIR bulbs.

See my thread on HIR bulbs. If you're going to drop $100 on SilverStars, you owe it to yourself to read about the much better bulbs available for the same money.

I got three 9006 dual packs. And four 9005 duals all basically free. My friend has a box full of them

Changing my bulbs to SS ultras was one of the first things I did when I bought my Bonnie and they work great for me...I bought some blue light bulbs off E-Bay for my wife's prelude a few years ago and they looked cool, but did not put out any light, so I changed them to Silver Stars as well.

Count me among those who have not have good results with Silverstars. In my case they all last less than a year. After about the sixth time replacing them, I did the standard 9005 high-beam bulb in the 9006 low-beam position and have been very happy with that ever since and never had a burned out bulb in several years.

I liked the Silverstars while they were working. It was the whole quick death and frequent replacement and premium price that got old really quick. If they burn out, consider the 9006 conversion instead.

I'm running Silver Stars on both Bonnevilles. The ZiLLA is going on probably 8 years now on those original bulbs. The SLEeper has at least 4 or 5.

From our history on this forum with them, the 92-95's have no problem with them. This is THOUGHT to be the different headlamp mounting design, with less vibration stressing the filaments in the bulbs.

If you have a 92-95, don't hesitate. They put out good light.
