Gauge Cluster
Can anyone tell me (Im away from my FSMs) if the SSEi Gauge cluster from any 92-99 SSEi will work in my 1997? Having lots of problems with mine, looking at replacing it, as cleaning the pins/taking it apart has not done much but buy me a little time.
A cluster in either MPH or KM/H would work for me, as my HUD is in km/h.
My only other wonder is if I install one that is in MPH, will my Odometer read out be in MILES or KM?
Once I find out a bit more, I will start a thread in Wanted.

Re: Gauge Cluster
Also, I know there are a few minor differences between the years on the actual overlay of the cluster, but everything stayed in the same spot.

Re: Gauge Cluster
In 1997 GM went to a differ set of resistances for the fuel gauge on the cluster... To be a Plug and play I think you have to have a 97-99 cluster unless you feel like swapping out boards... And if you are having issues its most likely the boards you have now with power supply issues..
97-99 to have it work 100% as intended...
Lets also look at it this way, there is a cluster in the 94 that has the 97 boards... Only issue is the fuel gage being way off due to the resistance in the sender...
Anyhow 97-99 is what I would look for...

Pretty sure 96-99 will work. 92-95 won't.
Edit...Don just ruled out 96 while I was posting.

Re: Gauge Cluster
Almost forgot... The heads up should display KPH no matter what cluster you have, Notice I said Should...lol
For the last few years of production the KPH-MPH button was not there, but the function for it was still there, you would need the button and to add a wire to the HUD connector... I think it simply sends a ground and the HUD changes to KPH or MPH when depressed... Not sure why GM dropped that switch....

Re: Gauge Cluster
GM ditched the MPH KPH switch. I put one in years ago though. Works great.
Thanks for the info guys!
TRIP resets on its own, speedo pegs at 200km/h frequently sometimes when the car isnt even moving at all.
MILES and KM light up at the same time, ODO readout goes all jibberish.

Yeah I think your boards are done... Some last some don't... We have never figured that one out.

Re: Gauge Cluster
Have any of you on forum tried the various places that 'refurbish' the dash clusters? I've been having issues with the one in my '94 SSEi, and actually grabbed a '93 donor from the U-Pull it yard, to take apart and see what goes on in there. But there are several places you can find online that state they can refurbish clusters with new stepper motors, lighting, etc. Seems that the going rate for the Bonne clusters (at least this vintage) is around $250 or so, more than other clusters, but i figure some of that must be due to size and number of gauges.
i'm seriously considering giving this approach a shot. I've found 3 places not that far from home (Mpls/StPaul MN) that can turn these around quickly.
Not having a fuel gauge or trip odometer leaves me kinda driving blind with regard to how much gas I might have left. And I miss not having the oil pressure and temp data. Not to mention the dark compass and D.I.C., which I have to admit I didn't THINK that I would miss, but do.
In reding the posts so far, it almost sounds like I might be able to actually plug the slavaged cluster from the '93 into my '94 and have it work. I noticed that the compass is different, and apparently not auto-calibrating on the '93 assembly. But I have to say that I like where the '93 unit calls for "Premium" unleaded fuel, vs just 'unleaded', and wouldn't mind having that on mine. . . .

Re: Gauge Cluster
Your Tach won't be right. The 92/93 tachometers are the same. 94/95 are different, but compatible with each other. Redlines are different between the years, and I can't vouch for other incompatibilities.
In addition, there should be no difference in the compasses.

Hmmm, makes me wonder what year I have salvaged, in that case. I don't recall seeing a difference in the tach makrings, but know for sure that the salvage piece has a 2-button compass vs the one-button in my '94. Well, either way, I was only curious if i might get by while the '94 cluster was away being rebuilt, or if I would need to arrange alternate transportation for a couple days.willwren wrote:Your Tach won't be right. Who needs a dash? Harofreak00 drove around without one atleast a week. But if you're doing any serious highway driving or commuting around here, definitely try to find something... Lol
