Theft deterrent system doesn't work, '97 Bonneville

Post by markr »

Never really thought much about the theft system. When I get out of the car and hit my remote to lock it, the horn sounds, the lights flash and the car is locked. No problem! Today while driving, the "SECURITY" light came on and stayed on, but no problem with the cars performance. When I got home I decided to mess around with the theft deterrent system as far as activating it and checking to make sure it works. This was all done according to the owners manual, but nothing happened like it is supposed to. (The Security light doesn't come on or flash when it's supposed to, showing the system is activated and the alarm doesn't sound when performing the test to alert). I don't think this system has worked for a long time. Is there any way to completely de-activate it? Can it be re-set somehow? Anyone ever have a similar issue?

not sure if the 97 system is the same as the 93. but my 93 actually had an automate 3 alarm, im thinking factory installed along with the regular passlock 2 module. i believe the automate worked as the remote lock/unlock and alarm and the passlock/VATS was for ignition. anyway, when i took the automate out to put in a new viper. i also used a passlock/VATS bypass module to allow for remote start use (I wired this in at the passlock module on passenger side). i believe that module pretty much deletes the security features of the car. other people also simply wire in a resistor on the vats wire under the steering column to disable VATS. but i would start by looking under the dash and checking what kind of security system you actually have in there.

Most SE's did not have the Alarm, And very few SLE's had it...

What codes are on the spare tire cover so we know what you have... if you have a 1SB or 1SC chances are you won't have the alarm... If you have 1SD it may be possible to have the alarm...

Code 1SD. Had this car for a year and can't remember the security light ever flashing and/or staying on when door is opened or shut, as per owners manual. Wondering why this would come on and stay on now after all this time? Could the car eventually not start?

I think on your wifes car you may want to check the trunk lock revolving the wire to it for the alarm... From what I understand they tend to go bad and have issues..

Yours I am not sure of...lol
