Replacing steering column need help

Post by hohosr »

So this is my 2nd bonneville and the 2nd time having to replace the turn signal. Last time I had the shop do it but I was a lot younger then. I researched a bunch of forums and got a very good idea on how to do it and I have the column out except for one pesky black hollow tube oddly connected to the column. Its a durable one too and not a wire so it cant just be cut and reconnected. The tube comes to a yellowish mount on the column and on the other side of the mount it has a metal point which resembles the top tip of a spark plug. The salvage column I got has it cut about a foot down and upon ripping on it a little bit it appears there is a spring and some other pieces inside it. Any have a good fix on how I can disconnect this tube and point from the mount safely? Does this have something to do with the airbag? What is the purpose of this?

Assistance greatly appreciated.

Problem solved. On the main wire harness the sides are detachable. Use a flathead screwdriver and pull the separable clips off and reuse the main plug from the original column. I got it installed and bolted up and went to switch the steering wheel and air bag from my column with the new salvage column and proceeded without researching.

I got the nut off with some wrenching and now the wheel spins free as a bird as much as you want. It lost its connection with the steering shaft inside the column.
Anyone know what I messed up on this? The mosquito got too bad and put the project to a halt for the night.

Anyone?
