Squeal

Post by dgleichner »

I have a constant squeal that is pretty quiet unless I am coasting to a stop @ 5 MPH coming from the front. Any suggestions?? Hopefully not a bearing. I might try a lube job, not sure of the last time that was done. (Bought the car 2 weeks ago.) Also, the car sat for most of the winter and pulsates when braking. Would you reccomend new rotors?? or should I try turning the ones on there now? Anyone know if cross-drills are helpful on a Bonny??

Its kind of hard to hear from where I'm at.
Coming from the front of the car is kind of a broad location for all the possible noises a car can make.

You've got to try and narrow down the location of the squeal in order for us to try and help you out.

My guess would be an old serpentine belt, but thats just a guess.

Sounds like the rotors are warped, hence the pulsing.
You could try and get them turned if there still within the specs. Or just go buy the premium set of rotors and pads from Napa.
Cross drilled rotors aren't for all daily drivers, it actually lessons the available surface area for the pad to contact the rotor.

Here's a link for info on cross drilled and or slotted rotors.

Sounds like worn/rusty brake pads. Do pads/rotors, and see if that helps any.

Don't turn warped rotors, replace them with new, good quality rotors.

Thanks all. I think I will replace the rotors. Not a huge investment for good returns.

Do NOT get cross-drilled. Slotted are ok if the slot extends all the way past the outer diameter of the rotor (vented to the edge).

Check the problem out before buying rotors. How far are the pad squealers from the rotor face?

I took her in to Bartlett tire. They installed the rotors I had bought, fixed the break line and a bad rear cylinder, and did some other things for @ $300. This included replacing some broken bolts. Still is making the squeal. The new rotors made a big difference in braking. no more shimmy :beerchug:
