I am back again hoping to get some advice, and I think that this issue will be a simple one. I, for the past couple of days have had trouble starting my car in the morning. it turns over once pauses then turns over once pauses. then I get off it and let it relax a second for fear of draining the battery completely. I try again and again I stop for the same reason. then after a third try i get a little love in that it turns over a few times before going back to the single turn. on the 5th try i get it to start. it was happening just in the morning, but this morning I stopped and got coffee, came back to the car it started up. then I made another stop and this one was a little longer 20 min. and when I tried to start it, I suffered the problem that plagues me the past few mornings. It started up, but I was afraid to turn it off until I got home. I have cables but the Idea of flagging someone, getting them to agree to help and then taking up their time is not my idea of a good day for either party. Now I will happily change the starter if that is the issue, or the battery, but how do I find out which. The guage that Identifies voltage in the car stays about an 1/8th of an inch to the left of 14 volts. so I am pretty sure that it is not the alternator, because the guage would show signs that it was the alternator. but I thought it would give an indication if the battery was bad. though probably not. its a 1997 Pontiac Bonneville SE 3.8 L SE. If someone has a trick or a way that I could diagnose the problem without having to pay a shop or a parts store money that would be great and everyone who has read my posts is aware of my appreciation to this site and because I bought a pontiac, my 3rd this site has helped me on so many occasions, whether it was deleting an idea or straight away hitting it right on the nose. anyway to all responders TY in advance. Mike.

Re: Battery or Starter?
Autozone and the O'Reilys where I live both test batteries and charging systems for free. I'm pretty sure if you have an Autozone near you, they'll test your battery and you can rule that out and move on to the starter if it tests good.
