Breaching the Firewall on a 92se

Post by SilverBird92/88 »

Does anyone know where the appropriate opening is for the +12v wire? on a 92se. I'm installing a xplod system and I can seem to locate an opening to power the amplifier. Should I drill a hole somewhere or try an run it through the duct work, any suggestions ?

I did it. I have found a point of entry, drilled a hole and successfully put a +12v wire through the firewall with a grommet in place. I found a point a entry by removing the glove compartment box. At first glance you see nothing but wires. Push them aside and look through the mess. Sever inches from the right side of the car you'll see two separate black boxes connected to the firewall. Just below them sits a carpet like padding. There's only about a 2 inch window of opportunity to drill the whole correctly. From the outside with your hood open locate the protective plastic part closest to the windshield. Remove it and you should see two separate sets of grouped wires running into the firewall. Drill right below the wire set toward the right side on the set closest to passenger side. Then add a grommet and run you +12v wire through.

Today I started by removing the plastic wood and rewiring my CD player. It turns out the Xplod is much nicer with more features but for now I think I'll see what this Kenwood is capable of doing. In the back of the unit there's no audio output for rear speakers. There is front out and sub-woofer out. Therefore I'll run the existing speaker wires into the amp then new wires to the rear speakers.

Also I've ran the amp-wires from the CD player area under the glove box and along the passenger side of the door. It worked out great because the amp-wire and the +12v wire run next to each other. The batter is on the passenger side as well saving me much time trying to snake a +12v wire throughout the car. Very simple so far.

Who's knows what to connect the remote wire from the amp to? I'll try the power antenna for now.

The antenna is the best place in the rear of the car to get a remote power signal. I forget which wire it is, but I think it's blue. It is easy enough to test with a voltmeter, though.

All wired up. The kenwood is up and going along with the xplod amp and sub out. Everything sounds good. The back sound great but the front sounds miserable. I still have to install the mobile crossover network for the tweeters. I think the driver side is wired as a tweeter and the passenger is wired as the tweeter.

Do you see right below is the +12v wire running through.

Nothing special yet: I can't wait to go driving.
Any suggestions on how to position the amp? Its to long to strap on the back seat.
I was thinking about leaving it in its flat position.

dont mount it onto box.
put it on some rubber mounts/ washers to absorb vibrations.

and i like where u drilled for the power wire.

i just put it through the rubber housing on the passserger door where the speaker wires run through for the door.

Thats what I did. Just cut a hole in the rubber ran the wire and put some silicone around to seal it up, I didn't want to deal with trying to drill a hole, it looks a lot easier for you because you didnt have to deal with the airbag behind the glovebox.

Good luck with that fuse. I had one like that and then it started melting together and it turned into a nightmare so I switched it out with a fuse holder that holds maxi fuses and haven't had any trouble since.

I used some 2x4 and made a square brace to hold my subs in place and put a piece of plywood on top and painted it and mounted my amp on there. Although I don't have much of a trunk anymore...
