friend's 97 Sunfire won't shift into park -can't get key out

Post by chuckk_ »

Hey guys, you've all been really great with giving me tips on my Bonneville.. I thought maybe you can help me give a friend some advice.

Someone broke into my friends 97 Sunfire (automatic) and stole her stereo. Now she can't shift her car into park all the way in order to properly park the car and get her key out. She says it will start in neutral, it's drive-able, but the shifter won't go into park "all the way." Thus, she has to use the e-brake to park and can't get her key out... which is problematic because she doesn't get a new window until tomorrow!!

My guess is that these crooks either yanked on the shifter until it moved in order to pull the stereo out and *fook* up the transmission cable by doing so, or they tripped a shift release on it in order to move it and it's stuck on or something... I'm not sure.

So, do 97 Sunfires have accessible shift releases? Does anyone have any other thoughts on this matter?
Thanks!
