Windshield delamination?!?! yes...

Post by anwisdom »

My wife comes home says, "Hi, my rearview mirror fell off." I say, "Yeah it looked like it was close last time I was in your car, I got some glue for it yesterday." Her, "oh cool." So then we needed to leave and we take her car. I get in and say, "I thought that piece was gray aluminum I wonder why it is black...owww, it's sharp...HEY...WTF...it's glass...where did glass come from...ohhh craaap.

There's yer problem!! That's not glass, that's UV membrane that holds the pieces of glass together when people start chucking cantaloupes onto the highway at night.

See the thin layer glass on top of the dongle (does it have a name?) that mounts to the windshield.

So it is windshield #3 for this car, no the cantaloupe thing was not a joke!!!

Never seen that before. Maybe the mirror was reglued before with something that didn't really agree with the glass?

It's new to me too. I have heard of C4 corvettes delaminating but that was when the laminated glass was new and it is just a bubble looking thing near the edge. I have never heard of the glass actually breaking free.

It looks like maybe someone or something hit the mirror hard enough to crack the glass surrounding it and the laminate was holding it together until if finally gave way.

That exact same thing happened to me in my 89 sunbird. Shut the door hard, and the mirror fell off with glass attached to the back of the lead thingy.

I just glued it back up in place with a glue kit... it held pretty good for a while.
