Torque Converter

Post by Tricked-T »

I am having the trans rebuilt for my L67 build and have a question about the torque converter. The guys at the trans shop said they can get me a reman stock one no problem which has a 1895 stall. They said they can get the same type of converter from a 3.5 oldsmobile with a 2300 stall. Anyone hear of this before? Anyone know of a stock type converter that would work but with a higher stall? Or anyone want to suggest a stall speed and brand converter?

My mods:
XP cam (105# springs)
TOGs
3.4/maybe 3.2 at the track
full exhaust
tune
N*tb
autolite 104s
shift kit
(gen V down the road)
Think thats it.

this car will be driven almost daily for at least a little while so I need a drivable car not a race car.

So what do you guys think?

Mostly a daily driver? Keep the stock stall. That being said, I raised the stall on the Zilla by about 500rpms when I did my rebuild. That was partly due to the fact that I'd changed my hp/tq curves through other mods.

Don't think I need a TC with a little more stall to "compliment" the cam better?

I would say no more than 2300, but if you want a little more stall 2300 will be good.

Just to note here, I was just on a short trip to a friends house and noted my RPM vs speed. I know this is a different car with different trannys, but I thought I would share this. Lots of turkeys around that seem to love the color silver, so I only got up to 55 in overdrive/locked. These were the numbers, just to give you something to think about (but again, this was w/locked converter).
45 mph---1400 rpm
50 mph---1500 rpm
55 mph---1600 rpm
Now this will not much matter for stall speed because mine was locked, but if you think about it, you can have the best of both worlds if you drive it properly. Use that extra stall around town for fun, and ease off the boost when locked. I don't think any lock-up converter is going to like the power YOU can put into the clutch when it's locked. But if you want it unlocked while cruising, just tap the brake.

You may find the PCM wanting to lock the converter too early for your engine, in which case you can wire in a by-pass switch if needed. Or maybe the PCM can be progammed to dissable lock-up until XX mph?

You can tune the lock-up RPM's and speeds in the PCM.

Im with 1FatCat, If its a lock up converter, and they are going to warrant that other factory unit works correctly. Let it flash in town, those extra revs will help that cam get where it wants  with less of that annoying lag, and will lock up when you back off the throttle. Sounds like something I want to look into. I dont ever drive faster than 60 around here and would love to have that extra flash. :beerchug:
