Exhaust Tips
What can I do to improve the appearance of my stock exhaust tips? I'm not planning on replacing them. But they are somewhat rusty right now. Should I get a wire brush and brush them up and maybe paint them with a metal flake? Looking for ideas to make them look nicer, but keeping a somewhat stock look.

Re: Exhaust Tips
well..you could grind em to a high polish then clear them...or you could paint em..i remember on a 93 ssei green/gold combo my buddys dad had..we took his stock tips and painted them like a tanish gold to match the interior/rims looked good
but with yours i think either polishing them..or sanding them, primer then some good chrome paint and clear would also look alright
or other thing is just take a grinder the the front of the tip..and leave the rest the way it is

Re: Exhaust Tips
I don't have a grinder- is there some drill bit or attachment I could use for my corded drill? Also, I was looking on the Rustoleum web page and saw they have a high heat spray paint. Do you think that would be necessary since it is so close to the mufflers?

Re: Exhaust Tips
you could always used sandpaper..may take longer but itll get the job done also..and im sure there is a attachment for your drill just gonna have to go to the local hardware store and take a look
high heat would be a good safety percausion so the paint dont get ruined FWIW
i used reg old black paint..i dont even think it was Rustolem
and this was after 2K miles

and for the record my muffler is only about a foot in front of where i painted cause i painted from the tip all the way to the axle..thought it would look better than a rusty old pipe..and i think it turned out great

Re: Exhaust Tips
Thanks, that is helpful. I want it to look nice, but as you are saying, it may be safe just to go with high heat.
Incidentally, this is a photo (albeit at night) of my exhaust tips currently.

Re: Exhaust Tips
Those aren't actual exhaust tips.
Just decorative "outlets"
AFIK, you can paint them any color you want. Just take them off the car, clean em up, paint and clear them. Since they aren't connected to the exhaust, I doubt they get too much hotter than the bumper, and that doesn't have high heat paint on it.

Re: Exhaust Tips
Those can't be rusty, they're aluminum. They are actually 'heat shields'. Sand and polish, or clean up and paint with anything. They don't really get hot.
They will get carbon again.

Re: Exhaust Tips
You can use Cola and aluminum foil to clean them. Its what I use on my tips.
Crumple up the foil pretty good then uncrumple it to its something comfortable to rub with. Pour some Cola on tip and start cleaning.

Re: Exhaust Tips
Just spray them with castrol super clean, let them soak, the brush them clean. A wire brush will work best.
