casting #'s on 94-95 L67 rod

Post by chris c »

anyone know what the stock GM casting numbers are? i can pull another good rod but don't really want to... arg.

the guy whom ordered the rods said the distributor is puzzled. i can order a rod from a link another user here posted but the casting #'s might help aquire a rod from the original distributor.

:beerchug: on the help, i need the right rod so i can get this car OUT of the garage and maintain my daily driver!

They're exactly the same from 91-95 rod castings. I have a 93 rod at home I can check for you (you can't have it, I need it to re-assemble my spare motor).

Be a couple hours or so before I'm there and can post it for you.

I think the rods were shortened on the Series II (1995?) engine. Could you have a Series I block? Are the rods about 1 inch shorter than what you need?

They may be confusing the 95 years... There were some odd things done at GM with the 3800 in 95...

The oil pan you have, does it have the windage tray built in and use a Silicone gasket? Does the pan have a fine thread drain plug..?

I'd see if the parts supplier shows different part numbers for 94 & 95.

Let's put this one to bed. Series 1 L67 rods were unchanged from the 1991 Park Avenue Ultra through the 1995 Bonneville and Buick Riviera. This rod is a 1993 L67 rod and the casting numbers should nail down the parts store/warehouse discrepancies. The confusion isn't uncommon, as the non-supercharged 3800 came out in 1995, but the Supercharged L67 (vin code 1) didn't change to the Series 2 (shorter rod) until 1996. They may even be trying to sell you the lighter (and shorter) Vin K L36 rod that came out in 1995 also.

Try asking for a 1994 or 1993 rod, because I suspect their 95 listings are incorrectly pointing to the Series 2 parts. Here's the pics of the casting numbers you're after:

PRINT this post and the pictures, and take them with you.

appreciated! :hail:

i went and spun the assembly around and was able to make out the casting #'s on 2 of the rods. i believed i made out 8 742 and 14 742. these pictures confirm!

mine say 2 73 and 2 27 on the other side. since 742 is all that is consistent, what are the other #'s? date codes? not that it even matters much.

i will be printing these for reference tomorrow and bringing them to the gentleman whom ordered the rods. he wanted me to pull a rod and take the exact picture you posted with the ruler!!!

i hope to have a rod this week so i can assemble the engine over the weekend.

i am sure you guys are as sick of me as i am of the rod.

i ordered a 742 rod and received a 359 rod. i am being told they are the same.

my rods are 742 rods with a dot above the 742. this is a 1995 ssei with a supercharged L67. according to this source i should have rods with a start not a dot.

http://www.enginebuildermag.com/Article ... ngine.aspx

•1993-’95 VIN L
The 742 casting with a dot on it showed up in ’93 and was used through ’94 or ’95. It weighs from 690 to 720 grams, based on the sets we checked, and has a .905˝ pin bore.

•1993-’95 VIN 1 (SUPERCHARGED)
There’s a 742 casting that has a star instead of a dot on the shank that appears to have been used for the supercharged engines.

•1995 VIN L
We have seen some 359 castings that look just like the 742 rods except that the top weight pad is machined off so they weigh about 680 grams. We SUSPECT that they may have been used in the ’95 VIN motors that had the lightweight 2170 crank, but that’s only a guess. We use them in sets in the ’95 VIN L motors.

willwren's posts show a star:

sounds like i can use the rod, also sounds like my supercharged engine has the NA rods...

:bluetwitch: :dontknow:

i need to stick to sbc's

Bad link in your post.

L27 and L67 rods are not the same, nor are they compatible with each other.

Do you have the same rod (with a star) that I post a pic of installed in the motor?
Can you get a rod from a wrecker?

I actually have a 95 motor in my 93 now with the lightweight crank. Both my motors are that way (SLEeper from the factory). I wish I could easily determine which rods I have in both motors for you. I'd send you the one I have here, but I need it do rebuild my '93 block when the time comes.

i am further puzzled due to the fact my 742 rods [which should be original to the car] have raised dots, not stars like you posted. i am going to chedck block to see if it is original to car now.

here is link again:

http://www.enginebuildermag.com/Article ... ngine.aspx

i felt the top of my raised dot 742 rods [reaching up past crank]. the tops are machined just like this 359 rod.

then this site add's even more confusion...

In searching and searching... It seems that the 742 Casting with the Star was used on many L67 and L27 engines.. The rods from what I can gather are one in the same... But there is one exception...

The L27 is a Press Fit with the wrist pin pressed into the rod...

On the L67( This is not what I know for fact, its what I believe to be the case )... The top of the rod is bored out slightly more to accept the bushing for the floating wrist pin on the SC motor..

So its very possible that GM did some freak crap as we seem to find, and used the Same connecting rod across the line of 3800's... It would be cheaper to do this..

Series II is a different world...

Just measure the rod length. If the length is the same as the rest, the rod is good. If the rod length is correct, suspect an incorrect piston.
