What's the heaviest load you've carried in the trunk?

Post by willwren »

Specifically a Bonneville. I'm curious for a reason I'll reveal later. I know some have hauled short blocks, what do they weigh? Anyone haul heavier than that?

How many pounds of bricks do you want to put in there?

I've had 4 bags of horse feed and one of dog food at 50 lbs each, so about 250 lbs, and that was no sweat.

455 Pontiac block with the heads, crank, and cam. No intake, oil pan, carb, exhaust manifolds, etc. though. The cherry picker was disasmbled in the back seat since I had to take it with me to pick up the block ~70 miles away. Car drove really weird with all that weight, but it did the trick!

Still a helluva lot of weight (you do the math on the total weight)!! That was in the 99 SE in 2005.

Put a 3800 short block in the back of the '93, Then put the '93 on a trailer. Does that count?

Mark, can you estimate that 455 load? The picker in the back seat would only account for about half it's weight being forward of the rear 'axle'.

My trailer is only a mile away, but we're in the middle of a NASTY storm, and I don't want to drive in a sloppy yard to hitch it up.

Bricks weigh 4 pounds each, and I need 150 (600 pounds for the math impaired). The bag of mortar can go in the back seat. I'm tempted to run two loads (Home Depot is only a mile away), but if we get a good break in the weather here, I'm going to want to do the whole load at once.

ELC does work on the SLEeper, although they are original rear struts.

600 lbs is like having a car full of guys, although it is leveraging differently. That doesn't sound too bad.

Wikipedia says it's upwards of 650 lbs. Plus, some of the weight of that cherry picker was on the rear struts.

I'd go for it. You're only going a mile!

And I've got L67 springs and ELC advantage over your 99SE. Sounds good. I won't mess with my trailer.

When my brother was remodeling his house after he bought it two years ago I loaded my trunk full of 10"x10" ceramic tiles from Menards in Alexandria and hauled them home.
IIRC, it was almost 750 lbs worth. My trunk was quite full and I was seriously worrying about bumps on the 30 mile drive home causing a little too much flex after the rear axle.

The brick alone will be 600 pounds, and should be a pretty impressive load. I'll shoot a pic. It'll be interesting to see if the ELC can keep up. On the 93, it's always active, but on the 95, it's only with ignition on. I think I'll turn the ignition on before I start loading so it can get a head start.

Bill,
You saw how much stuff we put in the trunk and back seat when we go to the BEST MEET in the WEST.
I even think you took a pic of the poor gal and how low she sat.
I would guess that we put well over 1000 lbs in the car. Good thing I have good tires on the car. ;)

I had 4 guys (900 lbs, probably) and 3 golf bags in my car one day last summer. That was over GVWR. I don't think the engine noticed.

Luggage, Coolant, windshield fluid washer... 2 Packed full suit cases... And in the back seat well I could hardly see out the rear window... It took 50 Psi just to make the back end level...

Ended up loading only the first 70 bricks and a 60lb bag of mortar mix. I'll get the other 80 bricks when these are almost used up.

Glad I did, ELC is getting tired, and it wasn't quite level. I ended up with about 350lbs. Next load will be 320. I only had to go a mile on city streets, didn't really notice the weight other than the back of the car was about 1/2" lower than usual. I probably could have done the whole thing, but didn't feel like unloading all 150 in the rain today. We'll probably look for an opportune break in the weather for the rest.

That next 320lb load will only be another $22.40. Helluvalotta weight for so little money.
